About the Author

Yea-Fen Chen is coordinator of the Chinese language program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and has been teaching Chinese for over twenty years. She coauthored three other Chinese language textbooks: Integrated Chinese Level 1, Crossing Paths: Living and Learning in China, and Shifting Tides: Culture in Contemporary China.

Meng Yeh is a senior lecturer at Rice University and coauthor of Communicating in Chinese: Student Lab Workbook. She has provided consultation for many Chinese language programs at K-12 schools and colleges and has received the Sarofim Teaching Award. She founded the regional chapter of the Chinese Language Teachers Association in Texas.

Frances Yufen Lee Mehta is a senior lecturer at Cornell University and has taught Chinese for over twenty years. She is the author of Colloquial Chinese Reader and is the recipient of several awards, including the Clark Outstanding Teaching Award. She specializes in pedagogy, teacher training, and material development.

Mei-Ju Hwang is the lead Chinese teacher for the Springfield Chinese Program in Massachusetts. She has taught Chinese for over twenty years and leads the district Chinese curriculum development and assessment. She has received several awards in teaching excellence and is the recipient of the Distinguished Community Partner Award from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. She is also the coauthor of Flying with Chinese and a codeveloper for LangNet, directed by the National Foreign Language Center at the University of Maryland.

Yuanchao Meng teaches Chinese at Oak Hill Middle School in Newton, Massachusetts, and was a visiting senior instructor at Bridgewater State College for twenty years. She is the author of Setting the Stage for Chinese Level 1: Plays and Performances for Grades K-6 and Setting the Stage for Chinese Level 2: Plays and Performances for Grades 7-12.

Natasha Piercehas been an ESL and Chinese teacher for twenty years and currently teaches Chinese at Madison Memorial High School in Madison, Wisconsin. She has also worked as a teacher trainer. Amanda Wood is a self-taught artist currently residing in Cincinnati, Ohio. Once again David Bohm, one of the most original of thinkers, has demonstrated his ability to make original and fascinating discoveries in regard to, let us say, life in general. This is a combination of physics, biology, philosophy etc etc or as it used to be called natural philosophy. Bohm was one of this century's last remaining natural philospohers in a time of specialisation, in some ways akin to Robert Rosen, Darcy Thomson or Einstein all of whom were willing to expand their frontiers beyond their areas of specialisation. What singles Bohm out is his deep investigation of all aspects of thought especially the study of thought itself, its origin and dissolution and is human life possible without it, in other words is thought all there is or does being human mean a great deal more and other ?
In this short text Bohm looks at creativity, what it is, what it means in human life, how it works and various other aspects. Bohm, like in his other works, shys away from any form of solid definition, this is done on purpose, rather than because of a lack of understanding, Bohm insists that any form of thought, concept, idea which becomes crystalised as the "whole truth and nothing but the truth" interferes with the natural flow of reality which is ever changing and never static, this includes ideas as well which are insights about this flow (expanded on earlier in eg "Wholeness and the Implicate Order"). In this book he considers something he calls artamovement or "the art of fitting in the flow", here the word fit is in fact the meaning of art, in fact all forms of human endeavour are a form of art. This fitting in is the way people find out whether something is true or right in a context.
This, as usual, is highly original and especially true to itself, Bohm always writes what is true to itself and himself, he never, right until his dying day, failed to expound the truth whether he liked it or not. He epitomises the true seaker of knowledge which today is often smothered by individual desires, political expediency, domination from others or downright egotism. He was a remarkable man.

Consisting of four essays and an interview with Louwrien Wijers, On Creativity provides a clear window into the ruminations of physicist David Bohm. Author of a textbook on quantum mechanics, Bohm is best known for his speculations on "the implicate order," a world view which draws on quantum mechanics in an attempt to go behind colleague Niels Bohr's "Copenhagen Interpretation"-to wit, that the mathematics of quantum theory, which lead to paradoxes in the macroscopic realm, should not be construed as anything more than mathematical treatments that work. This view, or rather non-view, was not acceptable to Einstein. The basic solution of Bohm is to suggest that our entire three-dimensional reality, which shows evidence of nonlocality-the instantaneous measurable correlation of attributes of distant particles-is a projection of a deeper "enfolded" realm. These essays, however, with titles such as "On creativity," "On the relationships of science and art," "The range of imagination," and "The art of perceiving movement" are not overly recondite, abstruse, or abstract-let alone mathematical. In On Creativity, for example, Bohr analyzes what makes not just a great, but a truly original scientist, such as Newton and Einstein (with whom Bohm corresponded). Perhaps surprisingly, he includes Helen Keller and her teacher Anne Sullivan in their company. The reason has to do with Bohm's emphasis on an open-minded attitude, free of worldly obsessions such as career advancement or "kicks," that allows the truly creative mind to bust through societal blinders and see the world as a whole in a new way. In the case of Sullivan she exposed Keller, deaf and blind from birth, to water in a variety of settings, writing the word on her hand. At a given point, Keller, who was animalistic before, put the different stimuli together, seeing their underlying unity. This is the kind of unity that Bohr argues Newton discovered in his realization that planets, like apples, fall-only much more slowly-a view that dispensed with the prevailing notions of the Greeks, who distinguished between the perfection of the celestial, and the imperfection of the earthly realm. Einstein went further, showing that seemingly equidistant and simultaneous times and places really depended upon the relationship of observers to observed. What is wonderful about Bohm is that he is deeply immersed in and respectful of, art and philosophy and religion. A close friend of Krishnamurti, he relates the work of Hegelian philosophy and Coleridgian poetics to scientific inquiry; he says he personally was inspired by artists. For example, in the essay, "The Range of Imagination," he attempts to link art to science by starting with Owen Barfield's analysis of Coleridge's distinction between two kinds of imagination-primary imagination and fancy. Although they are linked-mutually implicated is as everything else in Bohm's implicate universe-the primary imagination is much more than just putting things together in pleasing shapes. Perhaps the single biggest insight in this book, which everywhere battles what Bohm considers to be the deleterious effects of fragmentation (and mediocrity, conformity, and "the mechanical") in thinking, is his emphasis that, in great art, no less than great science, the truth is not necessarily what is liked. The truth is what we find *whether we like it or not*--and this scientific spirit needs to apply to art as well. In a way, however, this brilliant exposition creates a contradiction for Bohm, as he elsewhere identifies the true with the beautiful (in large part due to the aesthetic criterion of elegance for choosing among competing world views and mathematical theories). The book might also be criticized for being stylistically bland even as it sings the praises of art, as well as perhaps politically naive in tracing human malaise to an abstraction so great as "the fragmentary." Nonetheless, this work is highly recommended for its analysis of the fascinating, still woefully underexplored terrain connecting art and science.

I am going to start learning water modeling beginning with 2014 and I wanted to have an idea of what to expect and where to start. In the GIS Program I had some hydro modeling but now I am working for a water district and I would like to develop some modeling projects. Great book.

A translation of the classic Denkoroku by one of the premier translators of Buddhist and Taoist texts illustrates how to arrive at the epiphanic Zen awakening known as satori. The essential initiatory experience of Zen, satori is believed to open up the direct perception of things as they are. "Even if you sit until your seat breaks through, even if you persevere mindless of fatigue, even if you are a person of lofty deeds and pure behavior, if you haven't reached this realm of satori, you still can't get out of the prison of the world" Deliberately cultivated and employed to awaken the dormant potency of the mind, satori is said to be accessible to all people, transcending time, history, culture, race, gender, and personality. Attributed to the thirteenth-century Zen Master Keizan (1268-1325), Transmission of Light (along with The Blue Cliff Record and The Gateless Barrier) is one of three essential koan texts used by Zen students. Techniques for reaching the enlightening experience of satori are revealed through fifty-three short tales about the awakenings of successive generations of masters, beginning with the twelfth-century Zen master Ejo, dharma heir to Dogen. The translator's introduction establishes the context for Transmission of Light within the Zen canon and elucidates central themes of the work, including the essential idea that genuine satori "is not the end of Zen; it is more properly the true beginning"

Right up there with the Platform Sutra. Absolutely amazing

Cleary's translation (not "illustration!") of the Denkoroku is poignant, engaging, and by far one of the profoundest texts I've ever encountered. The extremely lucid teachings of nonduality contained within will certainly be of use to both the beginning Buddhist and advanced practioner, and will help to dispel the dualistic thinking that even some "experienced" Zennists persistently cling to. Keizan Zenji's message is strikingly clear:

"Furthermore, for long eons now how many times have you gone through birth and death, how many times have you come to produce and destroy mind and body? Some may think that this coming and going in birth and death is a dream, an illusion--what a laugh! Is there something that is born and dies, comes and goes, anyway? What would you call the real human body? What do you call dream illusions?

"Therefore you should not understand life and death as empty illusions either, nor should you understand them as true reality. . . . [B]oth or these understandings are wrong when you reach here. . . .

"If you want to know the reason why, it is because this realm is not affected by becoming, substinence, decay, and annihilation. How can selfhood and otherness be considered causeless? When you have forgotten outside objects and abandoned conditioned thought within, and 'even the clear sky gets a beating,' you are clean and naked, bare and untrammeled. If you perceive minutely, you will be empty and spiritual, clear and sublime."

It doesn't get any higher than that. I don't know why this book isn't more popular. Then again, perhaps it's just too deep for the American "Zen of such-and-such" society, who are content to live with a clear mind without ever discering what it actually is.

Dictionary of Flowers

This is a lovely little book. However, I wanted more pictures of more flowers. I also would like a few more definitions.

Disappointed. I had hoped it would contain all the flowers in the list at the end of The Language of Flowers.
It only contains 50 out of the couple of hundred in Diffenbaugh's list.

A Decent Modern Flower Dictionary

I bought this flower dictionary after reading "The Language of Flowers." My interest in floriography had been piqued by the novel and I was eager to memorize the meanings behind as many flowers as I could.
The book took about 12 days to reach me. I was excited to flip through the first 50 illustrated flowers, but parts of their descriptions lacked something. Rather than learning about the poetic meanings behind the flowers, I was informed of rather boring practises that took place hundreds of years ago. My only complaint would be such. Other than that, I adore the flower dictionary and use it regularly.
