I've always liked the Bentley manuals and this one was VERY hard to locate. These are excellent manuals and since it was so rare I'm very happy to have found it.

I have only read to page 1042 so I do not yet know how it ends, but regardless, Pensky has rendered a limpid translation of Habermas's "Volkswagen Quantum Official Factory Repair Manual: 1982-1988, Gasoline and Turbo Diesel, Including Wagon and Syncro." This is one of those translations that appears to speak more profoundly than the original, and with the expanded appendix, the full color map, and the inclusion of new chapters on both "Wagons and Syncros" this text will spend more time on my nightstand than on the shelf.

There are enough conceptual weaknesses and blindspots in the legal-theoretical models against which international law is so frequently challenged to show that the perceived problem arises more in theory, than in practice. Good coverage of merchandising

This is a great book because there isn't much out there that covers grain merchandising in such a complete way.

Although it's a textbook it really gives concrete, real-world examples of merchandising situations. It starts by going over the basics and progresses into the more advanced topics of things like transportation, storage at farms, storage costs, etc.. It also goes into topics beyond classroom material and offers advice on merchandising aspects like the potential of simply cold-calling potential buyers.

Overall a great book for anyone interested in the commodity markets, farmers or anyone involved in an elevator.

Unforgettable Historical Fiction!

The Japanese Invasion of China in 1937 is a dark period in history. The Japanese committed many horrible crimes and atrocities on the Chinese population. Red Sorghum in very graphic graphic detail describes some of these atrocities and their impact on the Chinese civilian population.
But the book is much more than that. WWII does play a major role in the book, but the book is also a look into Chinese culture, family, and is such a moving window on China during this time period.
This is not an easy read. The translation is very good, but the book is very detailed and again at times very graphic. I do not like to bash books like the Good Earth or The Single Pebble as many people do. I agree that neither book was written by a Chinese person and I understand some of the criticism that orginates from that fact. I enjoyed both books and think they are valuable. HOwever, if you are from the school that demands a Chinese author and a Chinese voice to Chinese literature you must read Mo Yan. He is a gifted writer and he brings to life some very difficult times in Chinese History.
This is a very powerful book and parts of it will stay with you long after you have read the book. Again, this is not an easy book to read but well worth the effort.

brutal, real

I have never read such a brutal, graphic novel. It is truly rare for an author to capture the horror of evil so clearly or powerfully. Reading this book is like being beaten up.
At the same time, it is about life. Within the tragedy is a story about people facing and overcoming evil. Because it does not look away from the horror, the hope it implies is authentic. Thus this book distinguishes itself.
I recommend this book for a mature reader because of its powerful content. It will not leave you unchanged. You will shiver, and think.
It is an allegory for the communist takeover of China, and the film that this book inspired won the "Golden Bear" award. An old, leprous landlord represents the corruption of the Guomingdan period. But his murder enables a young woman to take over, and clean up the winery, representing China. The book shows peasants glorified, a new role for women, the breaking down of class barriers, and a brave struggle against Japanese invaders. All of this must have made it dear to Chinese communists!
Perhaps a few Western readers will imagine that all this makes it a less compelling book, however. I don't think so, and I suggest reading it yourself. At least see the movie, which follows the book fairly well.

All in all...I'm glad to have read "Red Sorghum"...but at times it seemed overly "obtuse"...with a great deal of "back and forthing" to and from previous and past 'times' 'events'.. A bit difficult to 'follow' at times.....

About the Author
Danica McKellar is the bestselling author of Kiss My Math, Hot X: Algebra Exposed, and, most recently, Girls Get Curves. Best known for her roles on The Wonder Years and The West Wing, Danica McKellar is also an internationally recognized mathematician and advocate for math education. Imagine "Teen Cosmo" publishing INTRO TO MIDDLE-SCHOOL MATH

When I was seven, my mother got a Mathematics degree. At 29, I got my own Mathematics degree—and of 60 people that day who got Math bachelor degrees then and there with me, only three were women. My mother proved, and those three co-graduating women proved, and Danica proves now, that women can learn math. But that's not what middle-school and high school girls think, is it? Most teen girls think they're math-morons.

Danica has written this book for such math-panicked teen girls—Danica has written this book not only to TEACH them, but to ENCOURAGE them: "You can learn this!"

The math covered in Danica's book is middle-school level—Danica presumes that the reader already knows how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide; then Danica takes the reader up through Algebra I. Danica's math is solid; and Danica's explanations, easy to understand.

But this is not your brother's math book. If you flipped through the book quickly, not reading the text, the illustrations and all the girly-handwriting would make you think that it was a book about teen fashion. The book also has chapter headings like no other math book I've seen—Chapter 7, for instance, is entitled, "Is Your Sister Trying to Cheat You Out of Your Fair Share? (Comparing Fractions)." Chapter 9, on complex fractions, starts out, "Say you're trying on an outfit for a party. You've got the dress, the shoes, and the earrings—and now you're choosing the right necklace...."

Danica also includes three "testimonials" (profiles) of young women who are successful in their careers because they've mastered math. Rather than show three nerdettes, the three women profiled are BABES.

To me, the most amazing thing about her book is that she tells the "blank quiz" story about herself: In a seventh-grade math class, "[w]hen the bell rang and my quiz was still blank, I wanted to disappear into my chair. I just didn't want to EXIST."

When I read this book, I learned something. Not about math, but about people. Middle-school girls, in particular. I give this book a 4.99999999999999999...-star rating.

Makeup and math? Hallelujah!

What will this book teach your daughter? That she can work out math problems by herself. That she can learn to love math, and even excel at it. And that she can do these things while still being every bit as girlie as she wants to be. Makeup and math? Yes, this book says, you can love them both.

Will girls read it? I think so, because, unlike so many academic texts, "Math Doesn't Suck" is so much more than a study guide. Author McKellar -- yes, Winnie Cooper from "The Wonder Years" but also a summa cum laude math grad from UCLA -- combines a step-by-step approach to middle-school math concepts with lots of personal anecdotes (such as how she once struggled with particular math problems) as well as stories of how other feminine women have excelled in the subject. Also adding some insight is McKellar's 12-year-old goddaughter, Tori.

Best of all, McKellar makes her points well. Each chapter is devoted to just one topic (i.e., decimals, or factoring) and uses real-life situations (baby-sitting, shopping) that really make things easy to understand.

Overall the book's chapter titles are a little too pink-and-purple for my tastes, but then again I'm not the target audience. I'm not 13, striving to define myself while getting Paris Hilton, the Pussycat Dolls and Hooters commercials driven into my brain. Girls can be smart AND feminine? Math is for them? Say amen, somebody!

Tested out of 2 Math College classes with this book

I am a 38-year old mother of 5 who recently decided to go back to school. I took my placement test and tested into the lowest class available which was Basic Math. I was told that I could retake the test so I went to the library and checked out a bunch of math books to study and get prepared. I found Danica's book "Math Doesn't Suck" I read it first and read the entire book in one night. I loved it and everything began to make sense. I studied it for 2 weeks then went back and took my test again and tested into Intro to Algebra! I essentially skipped Basic Math and Pre-Algebra! This achievement has brought me renewed confidence in myself at a time when I need it most! It has saved me money and time that is so valuable to me. I live in Southern Ohio and am attending Hocking College! I am excited to read "Kiss my Math". Also I was told that she is writing a 3rd book in an email from her company. Thanks for writing a book that actually makes sense!

What a gifted guy Swann was. To bad he died a little earlier than perhaps one would have anticipated.
The book is probably not quite what some think it is. If your a fan of Ingo Swann, you will most likely enjoy this book!
If your not a fan, then better hurry and buy his books before the prices go up any further!?! The prices are becoming ridiculous.
But the one I bought, which is the Kindle version, was reasonable. The book of the same name is going higher and higher....

Reviews the History of Psychic Research

Swann is a very engaging writer who has much personal experience in psychic research and practice. I bought this after reading Swann's "Penetration" and wanting to read more of his work. If I were naming the work, it would be something like "A Brief History of Psychic Research." I was impressed by his review of previous pyscyhic researchers, up thru Wilhelm Reich, and his discussion of how and maybe why such research has always been ghettoized by the typical Naturalist scientists. About the Author
Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald (September 24, 1896 December 21, 1940) was an American author of novels and short stories, whose works are the paradigm writings of the Jazz Age, a term he coined himself. He is widely regarded as one of the twentieth century's greatest writers. Fitzgerald is considered a member of the "Lost Generation" of the Twenties. He finished four novels, This Side of Paradise, The Beautiful and Damned, Tender Is the Night and his most famous, the celebrated classic, The Great Gatsby. A fifth, unfinished novel, The Love of the Last Tycoon was published posthumously. Fitzgerald also wrote many short stories that treat themes of youth and promise along with despair and age.

It's an famous story happened in Long Island, NY, which describe a lovely story about a mystery millionaire Gatsby chasing on the beautiful woman Daisy. The book is kind of a short version of the story, but still very fancy. Gatsby turn his whole life to the only love Daisy, but the tragedy is written, because she is not the woman with virtue any more. When he died, Daisy and his husband Tom have gone to Europe. Although Gatsby held parties every Saturday, but no one come to his funeral. Nick was so frustrated and disgusted about the human reality of hypocrites, the he just leave away from the big city and came back to home.

Having tackled cooking with wine ( The Frugal Gourmet Cooks with Wine ) and American food ( The Frugal Gourmet Cooks American ), TV chef and Methodist minister Smith now cheerfully brings ancient Chinese, Greek and Roman cookery down to earth. Much of his Herculean effort, however, turns up fare that appears relatively modern. And though the "Frug" enthusiastically talks history ("Caligula and Cleopatra used to drink expensive pearls crushed and dissolved in vinegar"), his view is unfailingly vernacular ("Those Romans must have had wild dinner parties!"). Characteristically, Smith goes out of his way to make food accessible, sometimes too much so: crushed potato chips garnish a Chinese fish salad, and MSG is an optional ingredient in many Hong Kong dishes. Unusual ingredients, cooking terms and techniques are ably covered, and the recipes themselves make entertaining reading, rollicking with such Smithisms as "cut a chicken wing into 3 logical pieces" and "the end result will just blow your socks off!" But cooking instructions can be sketchy: in a chicken stock recipe, straining and defatting techniques go unmentioned. Illustrations not seen by PW. Here are some 400 recipes for Chinese (he finds the food in today's Hong Kong better than that of mainland China), Greek, and Italian dishes. Some are updated versions of ancient dishes, but many seem merely to be typical contemporary food from the three countries; few are complicated to prepare. Smith's vast audience ensures wide demand. History, Travel, and Eating Well, Gladdened by Three Fine Cuisines

In "The Frugal Gourmet Cooks Three Ancient Cuisines: China, Greece, and Rome," the recipes are contemporary, as of 1990. This is not a translation of the Roman Apicius (about AD 30) or of ancient Greek or Chinese sources. Smith delightedly tells us about what each of these peoples ate in times long past, their ingredients, ways of preparation, and ways of culinary life, however, and brings us dishes with the fine patina of ancient roots.

Thus, for a very low price (thanks to Amazon, my hard-back copy with dust-jacket & in excellent condition was 1 cent plus shipping), the reader can enjoy culinary history, travel stories, and about 1,000 recipes. Many come from restaurants Smith visited for his popular TV show, mentioned by name in this book. Since there are no photographs, space is used primarily for text. This makes for wide coverage: appetizers, soups, desserts, breads, veggies, eggs, meats, poultry, fish, salads, sauces, and rice. More unusually, dried foods and dumplings get chapters of their own. Without a lot of fuss, these are generally frugal (as one might expect) but not obsessively so.

The book does include clear line drawings where needed, such as cleaning squid. Handsome full-page black-and-white art introduces each chapter. Chapter organization is by food items, such as eggs, and within each chapter, the recipes from China, Greece, and Italy.

Recipes are generally easy to follow aided by introductory chapters on equipment and techniques. When Smith writes, "Chow the onions," we know he means to stir-fry over high heat, tossing the onions in very little oil. The level of preparation difficulty ranges from low to medium. When greater difficulty might be encountered, Smith tells us to buy the otherwise harder preparations, such as getting store-bought phyllo, not trying made-from-scratch phyllo, for a spankopita. The results tasted good indeed and the preparation was enjoyable for the recipes I tried.

Any negatives? A few alerts. Readers should be aware the title means what it says and the recipes are selected in part because some of them do go back hundreds of years. This is the distinction & purpose of this book. Further, if one wants an in-depth, comprehensive cookbook on Chinese, Greek, or Roman/Italian cuisine, there are much better choices. Think of this more as a sampler offered with gusto & gourmand-like enthusiasm. The tone is chatty & informal, not hushed as in a temple of cooking, which might be off-putting to some readers. Also,readers preferring glossy pages and sumptuous photos will not be happy, though the book is quite attractive & well laid-out.

Highly recommended as a fine blend of history, culture, travel, cooking, and of the sociable spirit of eating well in company gladdened by three fine cuisines.

In this debut children's book, a girl and her mother chart their own course in spring plantingAand reap the benefits. The girl narrator is clearly disappointed when, unlike her neighbors who prepare flower gardens, she and her mother plant Chinese vegetables that, her mother insists, are "better than flowers." While the other backyards yield colorful blooms, her garden becomes crowded with "ugly vegetables," lumpy, bumpy and "icky yellow." But when the girl's mother uses them to make a soup, its "magical aroma" attracts neighbors to their doorAcarrying bouquets of flowers from their gardens. Though the pacing of the text is a bit uneven, the mother's confidence in the garden's success and Lin's message of community togetherness buoy up the narrative. A charming, childlike quality infuses the artwork; boldly hued gouache pictures feature skies and lawns as patterned as the girl's kitchen wallpaper and curtains. Kindergarten-Grade 3 A Chinese-American girl and her mother grow a vegetable garden in a neighborhood where everyone else grows flowers. The girl thinks their plants are ugly compared to flowers, but soon learns that vegetables can make a very delicious soup one that the whole neighborhood wants to try. Soon everyone is growing Chinese vegetables as well as flowers. A recipe for "Ugly Vegetable Soup" is included. Lin's brightly colored gouache illustrations perfectly match her story, creating a patchwork-quilt effect as the neighbors' backyards all converge. Families of all kinds engage in all sorts of activities while children play happily together. Each double-page spread is a different color with a different pattern scattered lightly across it, serving as a frame for the illustrations and as background for the text. She doubts her mother's claim that what she is growing is actually better than flowers--until the harvested sheau hwang gua, torng hau, and other Chinese vegetables have been chopped into the soup pot, and neighbors, drawn by the delicious smell, appear at the door with armloads of flowers and big appetites. Filling spaces with curlicues and dabs of color, Lin places her characters in a tidy suburban setting replete with happy families playing on unfenced, wildflower-dotted lawns. Closing with a recipe and glossary, this brief consciousness raiser makes a mouth watering companion for Rosemary Wells' Yoko (1998) or books like Nora Dooley's multicultural standby, Everybody Cooks Rice (1991). Ugly Vegetables are made into a delicious soup! Little girl and neighbor's learn about another culture's vegetables.

The story tells of a little girl who helped her mom plant a Chinese vegetable garden. The little girl wished her mom would plant flowers like the joining neighbor's. The story shows how the daughter and neighbor's enjoyed the Chinese garden harvest -the soup that her mom cooked up. Then the following garden season, neighbors startied growing Chinese vegetables too!

This book brings back memories for me as a Chinese girl growing up in Texas. Feeling different. Then appreciating my mother's vision and skills. The brightly colored illustrations are fun, and the story has been a wonderful jumping off point for conversations between my mother, my kids, and myself about culture and community. It's a family favorite.

An awesome book and receipe included, how great is that!

Each Grace Lin book I get, I am just so impressed by her talent! Every child loves to get their hands into dirt and growing flowers or vegetables is always fun and gives the child great pride to show everyone their hard work and or beautiful flowers!

Every child wants to be just the same as their friends, especially those in the neighborhood. Mom and daughter start in the spring to plant their garden and while everyone else in the neighborhood each have their own way of tending their gardens totally different from how her and her mom garden. When their plants appear they look like grass, where other neighbors' appear they look like normal plants.

The little girl constantly asks questions as all children do, why mommy, why mommy and her mommy patiently answers each of her daughters questions. When others in the neighborhood have beautiful flowersthat smell so good, the little girls garden has what she sees as ugly plants with no beautiful scents. Once the vegetables are ready to be harvested the little girl and mother gather their wheelbarrow with their vegetables. Later that afternoon the daughter is out playing in the yard and smells a wonderful smell and it's coming from her house! Her mom has made soup using their harvest and her mom gives her a bowl..... it tastes so good! Then there comes knocking at their door and it's the little girls neighbors wanting to trade their beautiful flowers for a bowl of soup. The Mom tells the neighbors about each vegetables and the next spring the little girl notices her neighbors growing " Ugly Vegetables" too!

I love that Lin includes a receipe to make using these so called "ugly vegetables" and that she included their names and even sounded them out. Keep up the good work Mrs. Lin and I'll keep on buying your books and singing praises to anyone who'll read my reviews!
