Book with an argument
By J. Mueller
This book receives a lot of 1 star reviews because many students who are just beginning to study politics in any kind of serious way (and whose ability to judge the book's truth value is minimal at best) are annoyed at its clear possession of a perspective. These students suffer from the common and incorrect belief that when a book hides its assumptions or presents itself as being "moderate" or "balanced between all sides" that it is somehow being more objective. This is what happens when they are used to primarily learning about politics and history from textbooks their entire youth. This book instead presents an *argument* about how to interpret American government, and it does so from a "critical" perspective, meaning it is intentionally skeptical towards things like inequality, racism, poverty, and aggressive foreign policies rather than assuming their naturalness or goodness. It raises problems about economic class, the meaning of democracy, etc, in ways that don't fit with the either openly nationalist or folksy centrist interpretations that most students seem to operate with. It can be a bit dry at times, but the idea that it is somehow empirically irresponsible or "propaganda" is absurd. This kind of claim only demonstrates the lack of real exposure these students have with how thinking about politics and history operates in both scholarship and the real world.
