Decent, but not comprehensive.

This book is detailed in its identification of manners but unfortunately not a comprehensive guide to etiquette. Bridges' approach is to identify and state the correct course of action for a gentleman. To his credit, the book does go through a lot of situations in which men will find themselves in our modern day. However, what this book requires to make it excellent is a comprehensive explanation of *why* these manners have become 'gentlemanly' custom. Other etiquette books I have read excel in explaining the reason why things are so rather than simply stating 'A gentleman will...' as begins almost every paragraph in this book. Because of this, it feels as though Bridges is simply providing a cheat sheet in the test of socialising rather than truly teaching one how to be a gentleman...

... then again, that might be exactly the reason you want to read this book.

Got to the point, provided some unnecessary knowledge(I don't think I'll be meeting the president any time soon), but hey you never know. Overall, an informative, engaging read.

It's Not About You

That may be the most important lesson this book sets out to teach because as the authors put it in the introduction, "Simply acting like a gentleman is not enough. It is being a gentleman that is important." Or to put it another way, if your gentlemanly behavior is attracting favorable attention, chances are that you are doing it wrong...

or for the wrong reasons.

Much of this material will be familiar to those knowledgeable about traditional etiquette, but much of it is as new as the latest technology. Cell phone usage, including camera phone usage and texting, are covered, as is the proper use of email, along with more traditional guidance about formalwear (how to tie a bow tie with diagrams), how to know which fork to use and how to set a dinner table properly (with diagrams) so as to prevent confusion about the former, etc.

I was particularly struck by the wisdom of the advice concerning smoking. It begins with the common courtesy taught more than a century ago and segues into the modern era of restrictions, finishing up with VERY important advice on how to be a gentlemanly NONsmoker. The same evenhandedness is displayed when the topic is dietary restrictions, whether imposed for health, religious, or political reasons. It is quite refreshing to see both nonsmokers and vegetarians reminded that gentlemanly behavior is their obligation, too.

Defects? I noted very few. How to eat an artichoke would have benefitted from a diagram in addition to the detailed instructions, a topical index would have been nice, and there are always minor things over which gentlemen may disagree agreeably. The only two truly discordant notes might have been attempts at humor, which elsewhere in the book is usually well done. For example:

"If a gentleman feels the urge to color his mustache, he shaves his mustache off."

Ha ha, very funny. However, in going for the joke, the authors have neglected their primary task, guiding men into gentlemanly behavior. Since the authors nowhere condemn coloring the hair on top of the head or the wearing of facial hair, they present the graying, facial hair wearing, would-be gentleman with an unsolvable problem, which is not necessarily alleviated by deciding not to color the rest of his hair either. A man doesn't always gray uniformly, and going au natural can result in a man looking as if he actually has colored his hair...

badly.

The other possible joke comes in the instructions (with diagrams) for how to properly fold and read a newspaper in a confined space:

"A gentleman reads a national newspaper, preferably the New York Times, on a regular basis."

The jacket blurb mentions that one of the authors, John Bridges, has been profiled in the New York Times, but even so it has been a long time since one could recommend reading the New York Times for the purpose of being informed...

except in a punch line.

These minor nits aside, it is a wonderful book, ideal for reading in small bits.

Paul Tondeur is as an internet entrepreneur who lives and works in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.He started as a freelance PHP and Flash developer during his study multimedia technology in 2003. After successfully completing his study he was asked to become the CTO of a Dutch online marketing agency in 2004. At this company he developed a strong interest for 3D and got the chance to get professionally involved as the technical lead for serious Second Life projects. Second Life was too limited to fulfill his needs to create accessible interactive multiplayer 3D on the web and this is when he found out about Papervision3D during the early days. Because of his passion for the Flash platform this was love at first sight. At the beginning of 2009, Paul decided he had to take more advantage of his technical skills as an internet entrepreneur. Currently he helps other companies as a Unity, Papervision3D, Red5 and mobile streaming consultant. The Beginning Of Making Sense Of It All

Learning how to use 3D in Flash and Flex can be daunting. The open source Papervision3D offers the potential of accomplishing some great things, quickly and easily, but the learning curve is steep, involving a lot of trials and, usually, far more errors. As with many such things, Papervision3D is a marvel from a development community whose technical strengths are not matched by clear writing ability. Paul Tondeur and Jeff Winder have addressed this with their recently released Papervision3D Essentials, from Packt Publications. The first such work in lucid English, its 394 pages are organized in thirteen well organized chapters, starting with the basics and progressively broadening the foundations in related aspects, such as shading and modeling. Included here and there, almost causally, are productivity enhancing tips and tricks that many seasoned and experienced Flash/Flex many not know exist. Chapter One has to be particularly commended, which plainly, clearly and simply details the steps to setup the Papervision3D environments for Flash, Flash Builder and Flex Builder, and includes a test program that helps validate the setup. Each chapter has detailed example project code, again for both Flash and Flex Builder. The examples are written in Action Script 3; those still using AS2 may have some problems in getting up to speed. This is an excellent starter book for learning how to use Papervision3D, with the examples and discussions left to expand into more complex and interactive development by the reader. A good book for beginners

I never used Papervision 3D (PV3D) before and I was looking for a resource to understand how it works in few time.

This book was the answer.
It provided me all the info I needed to develop my first basic 3d applications: it's quick to read ( i spent only 2 days to read whole the book), easy to understand and rich of samples, demo and exercises.
It doesn't require previous 3d knowledges and all the code is written for Flash CS* and Flex 3. You only needs to have ActionScript 3.0 fundamentals.

So, if you are a PV3D beginner and want to understand something more about this world I can suggest to buy it.

But....although it's a good PV3D overview, it's not enough.
Advanced topics are not covered so well and after few days I already needed more info to accomplish my tasks.
Naturally it depends from your targets and needs. If you would like to develop 3D photogalleries, 3d menu navigators or very simple 3d videogames you will get all the info you need and however it's a good starting point to understand the concepts and get more info from web.
If you already know PV3D probably it's not the right book for you.

Book was clear with clear examples. Great to get you going on papervision fast. I think much of the info should be available online but pv3d info seems too scattered, so save yourself some time and get this book.

If you're looking for really advanced answers they are probably not in here though.

Jay MacLeod is a parish priest in England. Combining Christian ministry with community work, MacLeod still plays streetball, or tries to. His working-class parish is one of the most ethnically diverse square miles in Britain, and MacLeod works closely with members of the local mosques to engage disaffected teenagers and to foster friendships across the lines of race and religion. He and his wife, Sally Asher, have three children—Asher, Kate, and Toby.

About the Author
Thomas Thwaites develops far reaching design projects, undertakes commissions for private companies, as well as making work for public organisations including London's Design Museum, the Wellcome Trust and the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

His work has been exhibited at major galleries worldwide, including at the National Museum of China, Ars Electronica in Austria, the Zero1 Biennial in California and The Science Museum in London. The Victoria & Albert Museum recently acquired his work, The Toaster Project, for their permanent collection.

He has presented a four part television series, aired on Discovery Channel Asia Pacific in 2013. His first book, The Toaster Project, is published by Princeton Architectural Press, and has now been translated in to Japanese and Korean editions.

This book made me change my outlook on life and how I examine my day every morning. I am a goat we are all goats. Buy his book. Be a goat.

I enjoyed the read

It is an interesting book. I enjoyed the read. I wish the author had invested more in the last chapter but I guess that at this point there wasn't much because he was tired of the experiment (or that that part was hard).
