The second part focuses on financial engineering and guides the reader through the fundamental theorem of asset pricing using the Black and Scholes Economy and Formula, Options Pricing through European and American style options, summaries of Exotic Options, Stochastic Volatility Models and Interest rate Modelling. Topics covered in this part are explained using MATLAB codes showing how the theoretical models are used practically.

Authored from an academic’s perspective, the book discusses complex analytical issues and intricate financial instruments in a way that it is accessible to postgraduate students with or without a previous background in probability theory and finance. About the Author

Mario Cerrato is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Financial Economics at the University of Glasgow Business School. He holds a PhD in Financial Econometrics and an MSc in Economics from London Metropolitan University, and a first degree in Economics from the University of Salerno. Mario’s research interests are in the area of financial derivatives, security design and financial market microstructures. He has published in leading finance journals such as Journey of Money Credit and Banking, Journal of Banking and Finance, International Journal of Theoretical and Applied Finance, and many others. He is generally involved in research collaboration with leading financial firms in the City of London and Wall Street.

not much new

Although three years have past since the third edition when this edition came out. there is very little difference in the fourth edition. There is a new second author but the first 7 chapters are virtually identical.
The biggest change appears to be the expansion of Chapter 8 from 6 sections to 16 with p-values introduced and explained in various contexts and type I and type II errors introduced one chapter earlier. The introduction of hypothesis testing along with estimation occurs in Chapter 8. This may be helpful to instructors if they tend to strictly follow the order in the text. Chapter 9 is somewhat shorter. These two chapters are now organized by one and two sample problems rather than by estimation and testing. It is not clear to me that this is a better way to organize and introduce the material.

In the end, the text is only 15 pages longer than the third edition and there are no new chapters. There seem to be fewer exercises overall.

Although there are noticeable differences in Chapters 8 an 9, there is very little difference in the other chapters. Most of the exercises are the same (with a few deleted from the new edition).

The authors claim to put more emphasis on the use of computers to solve problems. But this is not easily discernable. I only noticed some brief mention of SPSS version 9 in the ANOVA chapter.

The book I wrote with Robert Friis was intended for the same audience of students and includes a larger assortment of techniques including an introduction to bootstrap methods.

Horrible at explaining concepts and formulas

As a statistics tutor, I have had to spend countless hours explaining to students the content of this book due to its lack of ability to make concepts clear. This book assumes that the reader has a background in statistics and does not need detailed explanations. I have had to use my personal statistics book (Elementary Statistics by Mario F. Triola) to properly teach the students statistics. This book is frustrating to say the least.

Fair overview, but not always clear.

The book is well organized from start to finish, and builds well on the topics as they are presented. Unfortunately, it often makes assumptions about the reader's knowledge of the topic, usually around formula usage that is confusing and difficult.
As a primer for statistics, this one falls a little short.

About the Author
Dr. Prabir Basu, founding President of Greenfield Research Incorporated, a private research and development company in Canada that specializes in gasification and torrefaction, is an active researcher and designer of biomass energy conversion systems. Dr. Basu holds a position of Professor in Mechanical Engineering Department and is Head of Circulating Fluidized Bed Laboratory at Dalhousie University, Halifax His current research interests include frontier areas, chemical looping gasification, torrefaction, biomass cofiring amongst others.

Professor Basu also founded of the prestigious triennial International Conference series on Circulating Fluidized Beds, and a private R&D company, Fluidized Bed Systems Limited that specializes on design, training and investigative services on fluidized bed boilers.

Professor Basu has been working in the field of energy conversion and the environment for more than 30 years. Prior to joining the engineering faculty at Dalhousie University (formerly known as the Technical University of Nova Scotia), he worked with both a government research laboratory and a boiler manufacturing company.

Dr. Basu’s passion for the transformation of research results into industrial practice is well known, as is his ongoing commitment to spreading advanced knowledge around the world. He has authored more than 200 research papers and seven monographs in emerging areas of energy and environment, some of which have been translated into Chinese and Korean. He is well known internationally for providing expert advices on circulating fluidized bed boilers and conducting training courses to industries and universities across the globe.

Very good introduction to Biomass Processing technologies

Very good book as a primer to such technologies and fundamentals of biomass characterization and handling.

You may get disappointed if you are looking for detailed technical-economical information for feasibility studies, but clearly it is not the advertised proposal of the book anyway.

Easy reading, comprehensive to anyone with good 'high school level' technical/scientific background.
