About the Author

Michael Sullivan, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at Chicago State University, received a Ph.D. in mathematics from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Mike taught at Chicago State for 35 years before recently retiring. He is a native of Chicago’s South Side and divides his time between Oak Lawn, Illinois, and Naples, Florida.

 

Mike is a member of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America. He is a past president of the Text and Academic Authors Association and is currently Treasurer of its Foundation. He is a member of the TAA Council of Fellows, and was awarded the TAA Mike Keedy award in 1997 and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. In addition, he represents TAA on the Authors Coalition of America.

 

Mike has been writing textbooks for more than 35 years and currently has 15 books in print, 12 with Pearson Education. When not writing, he enjoys tennis, golf, gardening, and travel.

 

Mike has four children: Kathleen teaches college mathematics; Michael III teaches college mathematics and is his co-author on two precalculus series; Dan works in publishing; and Colleen teaches middle school and secondary school mathematics. Twelve grandchildren round out the family.

 

Mike Sullivan III is a professor of mathematics at Joliet Junior College. He holds graduate degrees from DePaul University in both mathematics and economics. Mike is an author or co-author on more than 20 books, including a statistics book and a developmental mathematics series. Mike is the father of three children and an avid golfer, who tries to spend as much of his limited free time as possible on the golf course.

Algebra and Trigonometry Enhanced with Graphing Utilities.(5th Edition) by Michael Sullivan is as good a book on the subject as I've used since my first year of college and learned some of this material using older methods of the Wrapping principle in my studies of Trig. A good delivery and the Graphing Utility on the Computer makes the study more enjoyable, but you still need to know how to do it if you are to try to show another student what the graphing function is.

It came pretty fast. Regardless of the edition, the material is always the same. I don't get graded for homework, so even if the professor says we can't use other editions or tittles, i'm just going to use it anyway. LOL... as if the professor is going to check our book editions

Giant Book!

I come to find out that this book is actually for two math classes at my university. I only need one of the classes, therefore half of this book is a complete waste to me. The author should consider two books, because this was an EXPENSIVE book and when I sell it back, it's going to worth nothing.

A must have!

I have been practicing a ketogenic diet for a few months now and it has absolutely change my perspective of the Standard American Diet. I feel great when consuming a very low amount of carbs and I don't think I'll ever go back to the SAD diet. One thing I found troubling though when practicing a ketogenic diet was that I was eating very bland meals all of the time.. So when I stumbled upon this book, my love for Asian inspired dishes made me purchase it immediately! This has completely transformed my diet in the best way possible! All of the recipes in here are delicious and very quick and easy to make! If you're on a ketogenic diet but are lacking motivation to due bland meals, buy this book! It makes the diet so much easier. Plus all of the nutrition facts are listed for each recipe so counting your macros could not be easier! Highly recommended cookbook! I think I will be purchasing a hard copy soon so that I always have it handy in the kitchen.

We all read a lot of professional literature but, truth be told, many of us (myself included) hunger for the teachable tidbits, often leaping over the subtler insights that are a book's connective tissue. Here, however, I would encourage readers to lay back, relax, and let Ralph's unique voice and generosity of spirit flow over as you as you savor every word. In addition to being a great writing teacher, Ralph is a great writer, and as this is a nonfiction book, I found much to learn about the teaching of nonfiction from the entirety of the book itself.

As always, Ralph's books are thoughtful. You can feel him caring about every word the way the best writers do.

I've been reading Ralph's work for the entirety of my 20+ years in education. This is literally true as I won a copy of his "What a Writer Needs" in the first summer writing institute I ever attended.

Each of Ralph's books has somethng unique to offer, but two themes run through everything of his I've ever read: A respect for children and a respect for the craft of writing, two things that live deep within his heart.

As a final, more prosaic note, I can attest to the real-world validity of the nonfiction writing process he describes in this book. It is the same process my wife, a freelance writer as Ralph used to be, uses to do her work.

If you want to invigorate the nonfiction writing in your classroom, this is the book for you. If you want to understand what it is to be a nonfiction writer, so you can infuse your teaching with that kind of authenticity, this is an even better book for you.
