Definitely Worth Reading

This is a good short-story book - at least most of the stories have an ending. So many short stories don't end well at all & I love good ones. The first story, Collect Call 1 is great & the last story Collect Call 2 is good too. I went straight to #2 when I finished the first one. Then, the next to last story, The Boy Next Door, was hilarious - what a great ending. Definitely worth while reading. Only a couple were not good.

Thirteen - Tales of Horror by Masters of Horror

Good Book. I say that this book is a great way to find new authors. The stories of the book go both ways, from good to bad. Christopher Pike is a great author, with a beautiful way of writing, while D.E. Athkins, (in my opinion) is writing more for a little kid, than a young adult. Although your opinion will switch from story to story, this is a great instrument to gain new insight to authors you never would think of reading. I give this book 3 stars. I feel it could have more suspense and sometimes better writers. None the less, I feel it is a great 'light' book. You can use this book on a trip or just if you want to relax. The short stories are a great way of letting go for a little while. Sit back and enjoy

"13 Tales of Horror by 13 Masters of Horror"

Well, technically, there are 14 short stories, since Christopher Pike's contains two parts, set at the beginning and end of "Thirteen." The first part ("Collect Call I") is about two girls who drive home after a party, except they get into an accident and one of them dies. Then the remaining girl starts receiving messages on her answering machine from the dead girl. The second part ("Collect Call II: The Black Walker") begins some time after the fatal accident, when the remaining girl starts dating the mysterious Bobby Walker--only to be reunited with the other dead girl. Now, I'm a big Christopher Pike fan, but I didn't think this two-part short story was his best work; in fact, these two stories are somewhat weaker compared to some of the other 12 stories shown below (if you'd rather not know what they're about, just skip the following three paragraphs and read the last paragraph--don't worry; I didn't give away the endings):
"Lucinda" by Lael Littke -- A 16-year-old girl and her older brother return to their hometown to investigate the six-year-old death of his girlfriend. As explained in Littke's bio at the end of this book, the location for this story was based on real events--of "a real town that was moved when the nearby river was damned and the valley flooded." I really liked the original setting; it gives the whole story a remote, ghost town quality--and even an Atlantis feel when the town had been under water. >> "The Guiccioli Miniature" by Jay Bennett -- Set in Venice, Italy, a young college student is approached by a poor painter to buy one of his copies of the Guiccioli miniature. This 8-paged story is not your typical horror fare; it kind of sticks out because of its more "intelligent" horror and open ending. >> "Blood Kiss" by D.E. Athkins -- Elizabeth and her two girl friends fall for the new boy who everybody thinks is a vampire. This story has a lighter, more humorous mood than the rest. >> "A Little Taste of Death" by Patricia Windsor -- A 15-year-old girl reads an eerie ad in the newspaper that requests she contact someone about a 10-year-old event. This one was okay, but leaves a few questions unanswered. Restates the obvious: Never take candy from a stranger.
"The Doll" by Carol Ellis -- After moving in to her family's new home, 16-year-old Abby finds a doll in the attic that tries to harm Abby's friends and family. >> "House of Horrors" by J.B. Stamper -- While working as a guide at the House of Horrors, Mark is invited to an after-hours party in the wax museum. This was another good one; it vaguely reminded me of the movie "Waxworks," though it was based on Stamper's experience at a famous wax museum in London. Readers will certainly be able to relate to Mark's claustrophobia. >> "Where the Deer Are" by Caroline B. Cooney -- Walking to school one day with her four friends, Tiffany has a premonition that Nature (which consists of the nearby deer, woods, and cliff known as Dead Kid Curve) has decided to claim one of them after 25 years. But who will it be? This one has a Nature vs. Human theme, and reminded me a little of Cooney's Losing Christina trilogy, with the paranoia, isolation, and her darker, more spare writing. Definitely one of the weirder ones. >> "The Spell" by R.L. Stine -- A young girl's boyfriend gets interested in hypnotism and uses his new talent to get even with his friends who had teased him about it. I'm not a big Stine fan, but this one was good. The ending--though left open--was effectively scary.
"Dedicated to the One I Love" by Diane Hoh -- One by one, three friends hear a radio dedication to them, made by their two-timing (or, in this case, three-timeing) ex-boyfriend Richie--and one by one, each girl has a tragic accident. This one gets better as you read; there's a twist halfway through it. >> "Hacker" by Sinclair Smith -- A young student becomes a serial killer's next victim when she starts receiving messages from him on her class computer. This one was rather disappointing because of how easy it is to guess the killer; there aren't very many characters in it. >> "Deathflash" by A. Bates -- As mentioned in Bates' bio, this one is about good vs. evil--about a young girl who fears a soul-consuming creature is after her. >> "The Boy Next Door" by Ellen Emerson White -- A young girl working in an ice cream parlor (during winter, of all times) is robbed and threatened by one of her childhood friends. This is another favorite of mine; it's very suspenseful and has a great ending.
As shown above, the majority of stories in "Thirteen" involve ghosts, the supernatural, curses and superstitions, vampires, murderous dolls, scary wax museums, hypnotism, and--what horror anthology wouldn't be complete without--serial killers. Some of these stories are bloody, but even notorious gore writers like R.L. Stine are able to tame it a bit. Whether or not that's a good thing depends on your taste of horror, I guess. But no matter what your level of horror is, "Thirteen" is definitely worth owning, especially if you're a fan of one or more of the authors in this book.

Drake interprets the rarefied and decadent 1970s French fashion scene Saint Laurent and Lagerfeld helped create with insight and vigor, as well as germane commentary on the collections and the trends they set. A period when couture was faltering and ready-to-wear rising, Drake crafts clear yin and yang portraits of the introverted, passive and magnetic Saint Laurent, and the exhibitionistic Lagerfeld, known for wearing high heels, sporting monocles or wielding a fan. Drake conducted more than 100 interviews in her scrupulous chronicle of fashion's most illustrious rivalry. Yves Saint Laurent, the charmed genius of effortless success, and Karl Lagerfeld, the patrician workhorse, engaged in a decades-long competition for hyperbolic headlines and jet-set celebrity, pitting their cliques against each other in bitch-slap feuds of sartorial splendor. Theirs is a world of glorious, hideous self-involvement, where heroin is an accessory, violent political unrest is an evening's amusement, and a close friend's suicide is, foremost, a contemptible blemish on an orchestrated image. Drake's subjects made their livings and their names dedicating themselves to the pursuit of surface perfection, and her comprehensive examination of their barbed, parallel arcs is appropriately superficial. These titanic designers crafted their personas as carefully as they put together their luxurious collections, and we come to know them as reflections in the mirror houses they built. Although their individual aesthetics and personal recriminations are unique, they are united in the opulent glory of their narcissistic myopia. LOVED THIS BOOK

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book- so much so, I found it hard to put down. SO MUCH fascinating information on subjects ranging from Fashion Design trends at that time and the many insuing changes to the many historical, business, social, and political issues contributung to the scene as it evolved. The book is juicy with incredible details--- really FUN to read!

As someone who enjoys art and fashion this book is an insider's look at how a fashion house is hatched. It takes fortitude, ego and creativity which is something that both YSL and Lagerfeld do not lack in. Enjoyed the book's history of the 50's on forward and how it affected both designers who became the word in fashion. Some live longer to tell the story as in Lagerfeld while others fall into the excesses of the day and nightlife.

OK but outdated but I already knew that

This publication is the one they send when you join the Gold Prospectors Association of America (GPAA). However, they update the book every couple of years. I bought this old edition just to see what it's like. Membership in the GPAA is $80, if I remember, and it includes the latest edition of the Guide. After seeing this old edition and talking to some weekend prospector friends I joined the GPAA and got the latest edition.
I might have given this 2 stars instead of 3, but I knew it wasn't going to be real useful except to see what the current edition might be like. I wouldn't buy another copy; don't even need this one now.

About the Author
Cherie Bevan (the Cook) is a chef and caterer who grew up inspired by a mother and grandmother who were fabulous home bakers. She established deli cafe Gusto at Bondi Beach and Paddington in the early 90s and then established Crave at Bondi Junction and Bellevue Hill, before collaborating with Tass to create The Cook and Baker, in 2012. Tass Tauroa (the Baker) developed a passion for baking early and spent his formative cooking years in the New Zealand Royal Navy. Arriving in Sydney in 1995, worked for Cherie at Gusto before travelling and working extensively throughout Europe and in London under Michelin star chef Bruno Loubet. In Sydney he has worked at Jersey Cow, Darling Mills, Buzo and Bird Cow Fish and also again with Cherie at Crave

This book is stunning - when I saw the cover I had to order it. Baked Lemon and Rhubarb Tarts, Banana and White Chocolate Blondies, Passionfruit Custard Squares, Oaty Ginger Crunch....Sweet and savory recipes and absolutely beautiful photographs. A must have for bakers.Unique and unusual recipes and some old familiar ones.

guess who's got a new shovel, then?

for those of you who are familiar with the bbc series, "ripping yarns," "more ripping yarns," and "even more ripping yarns," nine shows produced from 1976 to 1979, this book is a complete text collection of all the shows. the book reads like a script. you may think this would be off-putting, but it is not. on the contrary, the book contains so much extra material which is not in the show videos, it is almost like seeing new shows. this is michael palin and terry jones at their very, very best. there are moments in the book when you will just laugh out loud in amazement at how witty and creative these guys can be. "ripping yarns" was created post python, and the humor here is, well, just a bit mellowed, more refined, subtle, and yet effortless. in my dumb opinion, I like these shows (gasp!) better than monty python. if you buy this book, you will laugh! all of the stage directions are in this book (not in the videos), and these printed extras are just as funny as the dialogue. there are moments in ripping yarns that are comic genius. having repeatedly watched the "ripping yarns" videos, I can tell you, the book is funnier. the complete text of all nine yarns! as the book's back cover says: "the book is ideal reading after 'lights out' in the colonies."

More Foul and Filthy and Pedophilia Bashing

I'm as liberal and open minded as the next immature, foul-mouthed cretin, but I had to put this slim volume down every twenty minutes and take a shower.
This is some foul, filthy stuff that is right up the Aristocrats alley.
Extremely funny, but not for the weak-hearted or religious crowd.
But with Stanhope, I guess you know what your getting.

Doug Stanhope is my favorite comedian and this is him at his best. He takes to catch a predator to a whole new funny level. Its a quick read but well worth it since i laughed through the entire book, and cried from laughing so hard through the whole book as well.

The SuperHero of Trickery

This book is a twisted version of Dateline: To Catch a Predator. They work with a group called Perverted Justice, an organization dedicated to identifying adults on the internet willing to have chat room sexual encounters with minors. Doug Stanhope is Perverted Justice in real time. He's like an auxiliary police officer on permanent leave determined to root out this evil in the most hilarious way. We all know those cop shows where the cop is tired of the rules and he gets fired from the force and although he's off duty he still tracks down the criminal? This is Fun with Pedophiles: The Best of Baiting. Doug Stanhope hunts them down with a mouse and keyboard and drills everything into their head that will haunt them for the rest of their lives. Let's face it if Dateline can find a pedophile that easy so can Doug Stanhope. Fun with Pedophiles is a masterful collection of real world transcripts from the superhero of trickery. I got the feeling that every pederast Doug chatted with was left in such a state of confusion they crawled into a corner and began babbling incoherent word syllables until they were unable to feed themselves. This book is raw comedic genius. It's reality TV in book form with gut splitting laughter, ironic justice and of course the psychotic humor of Doug Stanhope.
