Great Insight into the mysterious world of Tyler Henry

Tyler Henry is the millennial pop icon of evidential mediumship in the US. As such, his long awaited book was something I was looking forward to for awhile now. As an avid reader on the topic of mediumship, I was desperately curious how such a young man (19 at the onset of his show) developed his mediumship to such an amazing level of skill. The book does not disappoint. It delves into his formative years describing how he came to be the Hollywood Medium. I think the fact that he is so young, he has the advantage of being able to recall with quite detail the trials and tribulations of his early development. I enjoy how candid he is (No, he didn’t just wake up with this level of skill). It took a lot of practice, bravery and dedication. It definitely gives more insight into his reading style and how he is able to communicate what he does.The book also addresses some basic topics such as reincarnation, soul mates, soul contracts etc. I feel given the audience he is likely to reach, the book addresses what is needed without going into too much overwhelming detail. It also has a nice Q&A section that answers some frequently asked questions. I feel that through this book and his work in the media, Tyler Henry is doing a fantastic job of setting an example of what integral evidential mediumship should look like. If you are interested in how Tyler Henry came to be the Hollywood Medium, this book will not disappoint.

Finally an RT

I had been out of school for 3 years when I finally hit the books for the ARRT. I had this book and the Appleton & Lange Review for Radiography Exam, both written by the same people. I liked this prep book better because it broke each section down into chapters vs. just question and answer. The chapters where really easy to read and understand. Plus they where not so long that you got bored with it. At the end of each chapter there would be essay questions and a few mutiple choice. Writing the essay questions down and then answering them really helped. The only thing that I didn't like was the Postioning chapter, it was alittle hard to follow. Believe me this book works if it helped me pass 3 years after graduating

Get this book while in your radiography program.

D.A. Saia's book "Radiography Prep" is excellent. I only wished I'd had it during my last year of school. I used it for about three weeks after graduation to study for the ARRT Registry Exam. If you feel very confident after graduation you can just read the summary boxes and do the questions, or review entire chapters of your weaker areas. Actually reading the material is like revisiting the entire radiography program all over again. This book is the perfect outline of everything we learned in school plus the "meat" of the subjects. The chapters begin with a thorough and clear outline. The chapters themselves are well illustrated and the text straightforward, clear, and to the point. The chapters end with chapter exercises first, then "registry type" multiple choice questions. The answers to the registry questions are explained including "why" the wrong answers are not correct. There might be some mislabled pictures like on page 300 where the quantum mottle picture is mislabled, but most of the time you will catch the error. The image evaluation section was also better than expected and the images clearly showed what was wrong or why the image suffered in quality. Inside the front and back cover are many useful formulas and other information like transformer laws, body surface landmarks, processor systems, chemical solutions, and filtration requirements plus more. I can't reccommend this book enough! My school's program was excellent in instruction and review, but with the help of this book you should do very well on the Registry Exam. Please use this book and your program's curriculum will all come back to you. Good luck!

I have been out of school for 32 years and recently needed to renew my ARRT license which I unfortunately had let lapse. I studed this book and the Appleton & Lange review and passed the test with a 90. I highly recommend this book for confidence in taking the registry.

About the Author
Hanne-Ruth Thompson received her PH.D. in Bengali at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London and her MA in Linguistics at Freiburg University, Germany. She has lived in Bangladesh and is author of Bengali: A Comprehensive Grammar (Rutledge 2010) and the forthcoming Bengali-English/English-Bengali Practical Dictionary (Hippocrene 2011). She teaches Bengali at SOAS and resides in England with her husband and three children.

I got it--It's great !!!

This is one of the best Bengali language books around. It serves everyone from casual travelers to people who really want to learn the language and may know quite a bit. The grammar section is the best I've ever seen: clear and concise. Vocabulary section is not huge, but basic 1,500 (or so) words clearly translated.

Another really excellent feature: Thompsons' system for English transliteration of Bengali letters is simple, direct and clear! Many otherwise excellent textbooks (Colloquial Bengali, for example) seem to compete with each other as to who can think up a more arcane transliteration scheme, as different as possible from other textbooks. It is a relief to use it, as small as it is. No disrespect to the other stalwarts in the field, Radice and Dimock, but definitely one of the top Bengali books.

I bought it because I like Bengali script and wanted a dictionary so see how words are written. In this case the accompaning script (or bengali words) is a bit small so sometimes it's a bit unclear but overall it's very complete word-wise. Good purchase.

Finally a useful Phrasebook!

I have been trying for many years to learn Bengali and finally this little book seems to have a lot going for it! The size is perfect for carrying. Both dictionaries from English to Bengali and Bengali to English are very easy to read and navigate AND uses the Bengali script, not just a transcription. It is complete with alphabet and pronunciation, phrases that are actually useful and my favorite...a small, but very useful grammar overview! Overall an easy to read, useful little book!

About the Author
Meister Eckhart was a German theologian, a philosopher, and one of the most influential Christian mystic writers of the 14th century. Bernard McGinn is a professor emeritus at the Divinity School of the University of Chicago and the author of several books, including Early Christian Mystics, The Essential Writings of Christian Mysticism, Meister Eckhart: The Man from Whom God Hid Nothing, and The Mystical Thought of Meister Eckhart. He lives in Chicago. Maurice O'C Walshe was a professor at the University of Nottingham–Leeds and the author of Medieval German Literature.

A Gift of Eckhart

The best way of learning about any thinker, even the most difficult, is by starting at the beginning and reading. This is particularly true of the writings of the philosopher and mystic, Meister Eckhart (1260- 1327), a Dominican theologian. There is a great deal written about Eckhart from widely varying perspectives from Christian to Buddhist, existentialist, idealist and many more. Rather than begin with introductions which are difficult in their own right, I suggest starting with Eckhart's own teachings and trying to respond directly to them. Eckhart wrote scholastic treatises in Latin and a variety of writings in his vernacular language, German. The latter writings are far more accessible and are included in the volume under review.

A spiritual treasure, this book, "The Complete Mystical Writings of Meister Eckhart", is the most comprehensive single volume in English available of Eckhart's German writings. Initially published in three volumes in the 1979 and 1987, the translations are by Maurice O'C Walshe (1911 - 1998). Walshe was a professor of Medieval Germanic Languages and Literature in England. In 1951, Walshe became a Theravada Buddhist and was active in Buddhism for the remainder of his life. He is probably best-known for his translation of an important and lengthy Buddhist Scripture, the "Long Discourses of the Buddha." The Long Discourses of the Buddha: A Translation of the Digha Nikaya (Teachings of the Buddha) Walshe's translation of Eckhart's sermons is marked by the same simplicity that characterizes his translation of the Buddhist suttas. The writing is clear and unstilted. Footnotes are short and kept to a minimum. The book has been reprinted and published in a beautiful edition of 600 pages by Crossroad Publishing Company of Herder & Herder.

Most of the book consists of sermons. The texts of the sermons are transcriptions made during Eckhart's delivery by a member of his audience. The transcriptions may have been subsequently reviewed and edited by Eckhart. The Meister's audience most often consisted of nuns or other women in the religious life. Each sermon begins with a Scriptural text which Eckhart expounds freely and allegorically rather than literally In studying the sermons, it is important to remember that Eckhart delivered them orally and that his audience tended to be women religious.

The book includes 98 Eckhart sermons. At the time of Walshe's translations, this was the complete group of sermons that had been deemed authentic in the definitive German edition prepared by a great Eckhart scholar, Joseph Quint (1898 - 1976). After Quint's death, other scholars determined that additional sermons also were Eckhart's and added them to the canon. The fluidity in the works determined to be authentic should not concern the reader as there is much in this book to be absorbed. In addition to the sermons, the book includes translations of Eckhart treatises, "The Talks of Instruction", the famous "Book of Divine Comfort", "The Nobleman" and, another famous treatise, "On Detachment". A final section of the book includes short legends about Eckhart and a brief document purporting to capture the Meister's final words to his disciples. Walshe's own lucidly written prefaces to the initial volumes are included, and there is a short Foreword by the noted Eckhart scholar Bernard McGinn. The volume also includes a list of 29 teachings of Eckhart that were deemed heretical in a Bull of Pope John XXII dated March 27, 1329. By that time, Eckhart had already died.

Many readers find parallels between Eckhart's thought and Buddhism. But a brief introductory review of the book, or an initial reading of the text, is not the place to press any particular interpretation. The sermons can appear to be dizzyingly abstract, perhaps especially because Eckhart's language is often highly concrete. His style is often aphoristic and quotable. It is also deliberately difficult and full of paradox. Eckhart wanted to jar his hearers out of common paths of thinking to allow them to understand anew and for themselves. Eckhart also wanted to show the poverty of language in attaining religious insight. Most readers find a nondualistic character in Eckhart's thought. He wanted to lead those attending to his sermons away from a dualism between a Transcendent God and an immanent world. Instead, Eckhart suggests that God is in the heart of every person and being. The Divine nature overflows and is all-encompassing. It requires receptiveness and the pushing away of the bounds of sense perception to see the unity between divine nature and the human spirit or "soul". Eckhart tends to use an approach that starts with God and the divine and works down, so to speak, rather than starting with individual persons and the efforts of man to try to understand God or transcendence from the outside. His teachings emphasize egolessness, immediacy, and detachment, which are sometimes summed up in the phrase "living without a why." Readers of Eckhart will find their own way with the texts before beginning with commentaries and interpretations.

The sermons and other writings explore many of the same themes throughout, but they each put them in different ways. For those with little prior familiarity with Eckhart, it is best to work through the text in its entirety. The text should be read slowly and carefully with only a little at each sitting. It should not be forced.

The Best Source for Eckhart's Sermons

There are other excellent reviews of this book, so I'll keep this short.

The lion's share of the book is the translation of all his Middle High German sermons, organized and labelled in such a way that you can find them regardless of which of the seven different methods for numbering that have been used over the years, about 450 pages. Ninety pages are devoted to five short treatises. The treatises deal primarily with the Medieval style of monastic discipline. There is no New Age rainbows and Celtic knots here. This volume is a bit pricy, but the introduction by Bernard McGinn, and expert on Eckhart and the medieval in general contributes much to the value of the book. For those to whom this is important, it is also very nicely designed, with a spffy dust jacket.

For those who are new to Eckhart, you may be surprised at the briskness and brevity of the sermons. After spending a fair amount of time reading sermons by John Donne and Jonathan Edwards, I'm amazed at these little gems. But for all their brevity, they were often written for an audience of clerics and theology students. Therefore, the thought behind the text tends to be quite deep. There is remarkably little of what you might expect from a modern homily. Eckhart was primarily a university professor, so his sermons may come off sounding like lectures. But, Eckhart does currently rank among the top late medieval Christian scholars, a distinction which is relatively new. This is why out of his 10 volumes of Latin and German works, not much more than one volume is available in English.

Highly recommended, especially when compared to other collections.

Eckhart - Way to holiness

Eckhart's style, depth and inspiration are phenomenal. As a teacher of Faith, he is the true successor of Plotinus, Augustine and Saadya Gaon, and is only approached in value in the 18th century by Jacob Emden and the Testimonies of M.A.L.. His grasp and scholarship are universal and immense, his style compelling. His exposition is as inspiring and helpful to the Zen Buddhist, Sufi, Jew, or JW, as it is to the Christian. His mind and scholarship are unconfined by dogmatic bounds, and he quotes the Pagan greats as well and the Jewish adepts often, and reveals the brotherhood of Truth.

I've read the various English translations, and greatly admire Walsh's erudition and competence. Unfortunately, I have not had the chance (yet) to read the Latin and German originals, but sense that Walsh is truly adept in those languages, certainly as they were in the Meister's time. I am sure that the HS embraces both of them tightly, as will every true seeker. I recommend that you start with Volume 3, and then go on to the 70+ sermons. Imagine the dynamics when Dominic met Francis, of blessing memories. Imagine when Eckhart joined their Circle. Imagine the joy of the Word at his every pen-stroke and sermon.

About the Author
Karis is a Pacific Northwest native with a BA in English from Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, and a few years of postgraduate work in Classics at UW in Seattle. Naturally, this education led to a career as a horseback riding instructor. She has been teaching for over twenty years and has been published in a national equestrian magazine. She lives on a small farm in Washington with a black cat, goats, and a foster horse from a local equine rescue group. She spends most of her free time reading, playing the violin and viola, and riding with friends.

Worth the Read

This story has one of the popular themes for a lesbian romance in that you have one character who has a wounded psyche from her past, and the woman who will save her. In other words, the type of story that I always seem to like despite the fact the theme has been told many times.

Jamie is your seemingly overbearing and commanding businesswoman who is the "Love um and Leave um" type. Her modus operanti is to pick beautiful and willing women up for a few hours of sex. She won't allow herself to fall in love because of the guilt she carries in believing she is responsible for the tragic incident that happened to her young niece. She is the caretaker for the niece and gets her anything money can buy, but can't give her love. Then there is baggage from actions that transpired when she was a teen.

The other main character is Kate, a beautiful equestrian with dreams of competing in show events on a top-flight show horse she wishes to purchase with funding from Jaime's company. Kate has her own baggage in that she was groomed by her parents to be a social climber, and does this very well, fitting in with those that have wealth and prestige. Kate also has a caring and genuinely nice side.

These two do not hit it off, but are attracted to each other. I liled that these two were not between the sheets together until their feelings started to grow. They were still in denial, but the attraction eventually leads to more, but things are not smooth.

Both main characters are depicted very well and came across as authentic. The writing was good and the story flowed. A great book to spend the weekend reading.

Lovely well written romance

Jamie Callahan is a high flying Investment Analyst. She keeps any relationship at arms length. She will never let her heart become involved with anyone. Her niece Anna has everything money can buy, but she has neither love or Jamie's precious time. Any romantic liaison Jamie has is short lived. Love them and leave them is Jamie's attitude.

Kate Brown has grown up pleasing her parents. She puts on many different faces to meet all occasions. Kate's parents are pushing her up the social ladder, maybe beyond what Kate actually wants for herself.

Jamie and Kate meet when Kate applies to Jamie's investment company for funding to buy a superior horse to enter an Olympic event. Jamie finds herself fascinated and attracted to Kate. Which she must ignore at all costs. She has to protect her heart. The more time Jamie and Kate spend together the more difficult it becomes for Jamie to ignore her feelings. Kate herself, is feeling similarly torn by her attraction to Jamie, she knows Jamie is a player, she must also protect her heart.

Both women are vulnerable. They have to decide whether pursuing their path to love is worth the risk to their hearts.

When I read the first book Karis wrote back last year, I wondered how she would be able to top her debut book. Well, she has done it. This is a wonderfully refreshing, well written romance set among the horse world. Always a winning combination for me. This story is far more than a romance though. I don't want to give away any spoilers here, it would not be fair. If you love a good romance with a story to get your teeth in to, this in my opinion will fit the bill.

I think the whole book, including the characters, story and setting is absolutely spot on and perfection. I loved it from start to finish and was really sorry to reach the end. Another one for my re-read shelf. Dare I ask how this one will be topped? I hope we see another Karis Walsh book soon.

Worth buying....

I really enjoyed this book. When I spend my hard earned money I like it to be money well spent and in this case I believe it was. I also bought this authors other book 'Harmony' and that was an excellent read as well.
One of the main charters in Harmony is a viola player and at the end of the book the author, Karis Walsh mentions that she is also a viola player and in 'Worth the Risk'one of the main characters is a horse riding instructor and again at the end of this book the author says that she is also a horse riding instructor....I really hope Karis's next book is not about a serial killer ;-)

really is not that good. I would suggest getting another book as well ...

I'm new to the unix/linux system. Learning because of all the commotion as of late in the cyber world. This book did not seem very intuitive to me, examples are created and aren't explained as made up instead you end up creating meaningless files and have to apply the characteristics to normal behavior.
The book also does not explain some things that should be explained in the begining of the book. Usually they will have something that says "see chapter 5 for more details on -----" but not always the case, especially the email talk. They talk about emails and perusing email in early chapters but it isnt until 220 pages into the book that you actually find anything differently. I needed this book for a class in college, really is not that good. I would suggest getting another book as well as this one, possibly about shell commands. I'll update this later if I find one. The humor is very dry and pretentious to say the least, reddit users would have a ball tearing this guy to shreds.

Honestly I learned a lot with this book but I also put 20+ hours in doing so with many revisitations. This book wouldnt be bad as a reference but does not do justice as a introductory "quickstart"

Also reading the other person's review - if this book is nearly identical to the previous version you'd be better off getting the previous version. what they may have added was the indexes at the end (which are actually helpful).

Nicely written BUT not helpful as a learning tool

Unless this is assigned for a class (which is why I bought it) I would bypass this for almost anything else. The one benefit of this book is the clearly written text and the attractive layout. BUT many of the graphics showing code and output have been shrunk so much to fit them into neat columns that they are literally illegible without a magnifying glass. So you miss whatever the point of those examples might be. Moreover, coverage of many areas that are important for beginners is absent or skimpy.

I was lucky to be able to find supplementary material from the library to get me through the class - this was pretty inadequate.

Don't see any difference between this 5th edition and the previous edition (which I have). Page for page the book seems to be identical. Which is probably the reason why the authors haven't explained in the intro why they've bothered with a new edition.
