Good Teaching CD
By Gerard Freisinger
CD is a redo of this famous atlas and can be used for teaching. Am using it for teaching a course on EKG to techs and nurses.

Would like ability to make slides for better organizatin -does not allow this.
Also the CD does not run on my laptop with Vista so must use it on XP
Mot unusual since quite a bit of software does not run on Vista.

The first order came with any empty CD case from Amazon. However, a repeat order was shipped without questions.

Otherwise, an excellent product.

Motorcycle Consumer News (USA)

I remember the first time I met Chris Scott, on a cold Colorado morning near Durango.  He had decided to fly all the way to the US to buy an inflatable kayak, a plan that would save him nearly the cost of the trip in taxes and shipping. I do suspect the decision was made partially for practical reasons, but I think Chris just wanted to get lost for a weekend- in reality, Chris has been trying to get lost his entire life. As a traveler and editor, Chris is infinitely likable, and not because of his extensive experience (which he has in spades), but because of his honest, genuine and simple approach to equipment, vehicles and travel. Even a casual review of Chris' travels show a fantastic diversity and infinite practicality. From traveling in Australia by BMW motorcycle to bouncing around Morocco in a Mercedes sedan, Chris has made a lifetime emphasis on the pursuit of approachable adventuring. It is that emphasis that makes the Adventure Motorcycling Handbook so incredibly valuable. It is not a glossy sales brochure for Triumph or BMW, but a gritty, honest, hard won review of what actually works and what you really need to ride a motorcycle overland.

The Adventure Motorcycle Handbook follows a logical review of pursuing moto travel, starting with planning and preparation before selecting a bike and then ultimately living on the road and selecting individual routes.  Chris does a great job of interjecting the thoughts, musings and opinions of other experts, all lending to a broader perspective and more interesting read. The book also includes some important updates regarding new models, current route conditions and improved technologies for equipment. While the book is absolutely a definitive guide to praparing for a round-the-world expedition or even a short jaunt to Baja, it most importantly serves as an inspiration to the reader, an impetus to venture further.

- Scott Brady, Overland International

Lots of new material in the 6th edition...
By K9 Gromit
Even if you have a well worn copy of the last edition, it's worth upgrading to the latest (Nov, 2012 - 6th ed) of the AMH. Tons of new material and the same solid format that made this book great in the first place. Buy the book, read the book, ride out to an Overland Expo or a Horizons Unlimited meetup, do a few exploratory journeys (mostly to see how *little* you need to be comfortable on the road then go for it...

A spectacular reference for Adventure Motorcycling
By Mark C Miller
This book makes me want to hop on a motorcycle and ride everywhere! This book gives the aspiring ADV rider the recommendations necessary to get going. It's suggestions are extensive and cover many things that would have otherwise been overlooked (travel visas, international insurance, carnets, etc).

I've found it very easy to read for both short and long stints. It's spectacularly well-edited, you rarely find yourself having to turn the page to read the last two sentences of a section before putting the book down. The writing is concise and gives examples and alternatives that might be helpful to riders of all skill levels.

If you're even a bit interested in overland travel via motorcycle you should absolutely get this book. You won't be disappointed.

Round the World, or Touring your own Country... this is an excellent starting point!
By Amazon Customer
This, my Haynes manual, and 'Proficient Motorcycling'... all great books for someone who just bought a bike and honestly intends on doing something with it. I have been through it once, and I'm going back making notes for my upcoming TransAmerica Trail trip.

Great supplement for exam prep
By Physics Enthusiast
I used this book as a supplement for a course in Physical Optics, mainly to get practice in solving problems. I found the chapters on Polarization and Diffraction very useful. This book helped me get a better grade in this course. This book does not cover the topics like Jones and Coherence Matrix and Stokes vector. However these topics are covered well in the same author's Optics text. BTW, The Optics text is also very good. Solving problems in this book and then approaching the text gives a much better understanding of Optics. This book does not cover Poincare' sphere, which is also an important topic for which we cant find material anywhere except our Professor's lecture notes. Overall, this book is a must if you are taking any Optics course or the GRE physics text or if you just want to master the basics of Optics.

Clear concise outline of optics
By calvinnme
This Schaum's outline is better than the expensive textbook by the same author on the same subject in many ways, and in my opinion stands alone as a guide on optics. It gets to the meat of optics via solving problems that range from simple to difficult, which is particularly attractive to engineers learning or reviewing this subject. To me, the only chapters that seemed a bit confusing were the first two on wave motion and on electromagnetic waves and photons. For that material you may need to consult another source. From that point onward, however, the outline couldn't be any better. The outline even has a chapter that introduces Fourier optics. This outline would make an excellent review or supplement for someone taking a course in Photonics that uses Saleh's "Fundamentals of Photonics". That textbook has virtually no solved problems in it whatsoever, and the first third of the book follows the material covered in this outline nicely.

Excellent!

Hecht is one of the premier instructors and authors on the subject of optics and his contribution to Schaum's is no exception! I used this book to teach myself the fundamental's of optics while working in an applied physics laboratory. Very clearly presented material

-One day I couldn't find my car for 30 minutes in an airport parking lot.
-One day I was stressed waiting for my offer to get approved.
-One day I hurt my shoulder very badly and was worried it would never be the same.
-One day a close friend betrayed me.

We all know stressful situations can creep in, they affect our breathing, our mood, our appetite, and even our digestion.

The point is, in each of those cases the lessons in this book came to my mind and I was able to use the techniques taught to regain control of my emotions and tackle the problems with a clearer head.

This is the first book I have read that tackles mindset in a non hippie esoteric manner.

I recently went to a Gorilla Mindset Seminar to get to know Mike a bit better.

I wanted to check his demeanor, his friends, his wife, and decide if this man is congruent with the claims he makes online.

What I found was that he is even better in real life!

He is the real thing, and he's a really NICE GUY despite all the trolling online!!

He did not try to sell anything to us. Everyone there already had Gorilla Mindset.

He paid for the venue out of pocket and charged us nothing.

He spent the entire time going over the techniques in Gorilla Mindset and answering our questions.

Believe it or not Mike is actually trying to help people!

I highly suggest this book to anyone looking for concrete and practical steps to get better control of their emotions.

but this has been one of the best bang for buck items I have ever purchased
By Michael
I don't usually review products on Amazon, but this has been one of the best bang for buck items I have ever purchased. As someone who considers himself generally well put-together, I was surprised by how helpful this book has been in furthering my own journey toward self-mastery. If you're skeptical about self-help books, join the club. However, this isn't a self-help book in the traditional sense of the term, but more of a tool and exercise guide. If' you're already successful, the concepts in this book will help you streamline yourself and become more focused. If you're not there yet, it's an incredible boost on the road to self confidence. I can personally attest to this, having purchased three copies of this book, one for me and two for close friends who were in a low place in their life. One of the recipients of this book credits the work he did with it to his getting up off his parents' couch, getting a job, and getting his own place for the first time. The other has found the self-talk exercises helpful in coping with symptoms of depression. Personally, I can't say enough good things about this book. For less than 15 bucks, it's truly invaluable as it will pay for itself countless times in value added to your life. I have MAGA Mindset on the way, even though I'm not a Trump fan, because I'm sure I'll be able to find some pearls of wisdom in any of Mike's writing.

Highly recommended - a great gift
By Matthew Beelman
I first discovered Mike Cernovich on Twitter because his take on media trends and opinions stood out as cutting edge and highly accurate. I then followed his Periscopes for the last 16 months of the election. His ability to cut through the noise of the mainstream media corruption and manipulation was so on point that I became a rabid fan, and I'm certainly not alone in that regard. I decided to purchase Gorilla Mindset to look deeper into the man and the tools he uses in his life to open himself up to greater success in life. I enjoy his writings by style it's very easy to read and digest quickly and the tools are simple yet effective. I could go on forever so I'll just say I ended up buying the audiobook version as well for 'refreshers' on the tools for times when I am driving, at work, or going for a walk. His advice on mindset has already improved the way I look at myself and how I view various 'failures' that used to haunt me and were defining how I viewed myself, which was holding me back from taking more risks. In short, mindset is everything in this life. It either holds you back and creates invisible barriers to success or it can catapult you into an entirely new life where possibilities are only limited by the imagination. BUY THIS BOOK!!

The Princess and the Fog: A Story for Children with Depression, by Lloyd Jones

Bronze Medal Winner in the Picture Books, Early Reader category of the 2015 Foreword Reviews' INDIEFAB Book of the Year Awards

Once upon a time there was a Princess. She had everything a little girl could ever want, and she was happy. That is, until the fog came...

The Princess and the Fog is picture book to help sufferers of depression aged 5-7 cope with their difficult feelings. It uses vibrant illustrations, a sense of humour and metaphor to create a relatable, enjoyable story that describes the symptoms of childhood depression while also providing hope that things can get better with a little help and support. The story is also a great starting point for explaining depression to all children, especially those who may have a parent or close family member with depression.

With an essential guide for parents and carers by clinical paediatric psychologists, Dr Melinda Edwards MBE and Linda Bayliss, this book will be of immeasurable value to anyone supporting a child with, or affected by, depression, including social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, counsellors, arts therapists, pastoral care workers and school staff, as well as parents and carers.

Depression is fortunately rare in young children but sadly all too common in those around them. This picture book with its simple but accurate text and amusing illustrations is an invaluable aid to talking about depression with children. If your child, or someone important in their life, is affected by depression then this book will help you discuss the causes and treatments of depression in age appropriate language. Lloyd Jones is an "evidence-based author", he has done a very good job of accurately summarising what is known about childhood depression in a way that will amuse as well as inform a young child. -- David Cottrell, Professor of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, University of Leeds, and co-author of NICE, Depression in Children & Young People, Clinical Guideline We don't often think about younger children having depression, what we mistake for early puberty might actually be early signs of depression. This book is aimed at kids ages 5-7 (but kids under 9 will appreciate it as well) describes what kids feel when 'the fog descends' and kids don't want to do anything, or do what they used to.It is also a very good book for kids with parents who suffer from depression, to read and to help understand what is going on with the person with depression, and why they don't act 'like themselves' anymore, but then later they do. The illustrations by Lloyd fit the story perfectly. The book also includes a depression guide for parents and caregivers, by Dr Melinda Edwards and Linda Bayliss, that's offers great tips, suggestions and guidance. This is a book that needs to be at every school, and read to every child!. We highly recommend this book! I found this children's book both informational and appealing to the eye. By discussing her feelings, setting up daily challenges, and receiving advice from various people, the princess begins to feel better. The people in her life and the advice that she receives also help her deal with the dark clouds when they return. This title effectively conveys what depression feels like to children. The fairy tale-type story and the striking, dynamic illustrations, which use color to indicate the princess's changing mood, make a heavy topic accessible. A special author's note is included for caregivers on helping children with depression. highly recommended for Grades K-6
By Lissa Parker
Every child needs to hear this book. Highly, highly recommended for Grades K-6. Depression needs to be part of children's vocabulary. Without accurate information, many children are influenced by myths about depression (i.e. just snap out of it) or have no idea that their feelings of distress are out of the norm. Left untreated, depression can wreak havoc on an individual's life. Twenty percent of teens experience depression and 1 in 8 have thoughts of suicide.
This is a great book for parents and anyone who works with children, especially at risk populations--Health teachers, school counselors, therapists...

Depression Symptoms
eating or sleeping too much or too little
feeling hopeless, guilty, ashamed
neglecting hygiene
low self esteem, self critical, pessimistic
lack of interest in activities that used to be enjoyed
low energy, difficulty focusing and making decisions/plans
irritability, aggression (teens more likely to exhibit this, rather than sadness)
gives up easily
“flat” facial expression, tone of voice
school performance worsens
physical complaints (e.g. frequent stomachaches)

Suicidal Ideation Signs
depression
death themes in drawings and writings
does not make future plans, does not think life will get better
speech or behavior that may indicate person is saying “goodbye” (e.g. gives away belongings)
indications that the person feels like a burden to others (e.g. guilt, shame)
getting items that could be used for self harm (e.g. over the counter, prescription, illegal drugs)

individuals at higher risk for suicide:
- those who have known someone who committed suicide, including acquaintances
- individual and/or their family members have mental health/substance abuse disorders
- experienced death of a loved one
- experienced bullying, social exclusion & social isolation
- victims of physical, sexual, emotional abuse & neglect and other traumas

A Delicate Topic Dealt With in an Amazing Way
By Grateful Grandma
The Princess and the Fog: A Story for Children with Depression by Lloyd Jones is a helpful picturebook for readers of all ages. It begins, as do many good stories: "Once upon a time, there was a Princess." This Princess was happy, loved, and content... until the fog came. Soon she did not want to do her favorite things, or anything really. A persistent friend offered to listen, and soon the princess was able to share with others about the presence of the fog and how it made her feel. She went to the `doctor`who whipped something up (medication) and they banished the fog, at least for now, and have a plan to deal with it when it makes periodic returns. This is a creative and entertaining book that tackles a serious topic/issue that many people do not want to deal with and is often not recognized, but depression is real and not only do adults deal with it but so do children and teenagers. This book describes and illustrates simply and beautifully the onset of depression, the experience of it at its worst, and the various self-help methods available to deal with it. More importantly, 'A Guide for Parents and Carers' at the back of the book and written by medically qualified professionals does differentiate between low mood and depression, assisting in defining the two. A great book for families dealing with the issue of depression or classrooms where a student has depression.

Thank you Netgalley and Jessica Kingsley Publishers for the opportunity to read and review this book.

The Half Has Never Been Told: Slavery and the Making of American Capitalism, by Edward E. Baptist

Americans tend to cast slavery as a pre-modern institution—the nation’s original sin, perhaps, but isolated in time and divorced from America’s later success. But to do so robs the millions who suffered in bondage of their full legacy. As historian Edward E. Baptist reveals in The Half Has Never Been Told, the expansion of slavery in the first eight decades after American independence drove the evolution and modernization of the United States. In the span of a single lifetime, the South grew from a narrow coastal strip of worn-out tobacco plantations to a continental cotton empire, and the United States grew into a modern, industrial, and capitalist economy. Told through intimate slave narratives, plantation records, newspapers, and the words of politicians, entrepreneurs, and escaped slaves, The Half Has Never Been Told offers a radical new interpretation of American history.

Review
Los Angeles Times
“The overwhelming power of the stories that Baptist recounts, and the plantation-level statistics he’s compiled, give his book the power of truth and revelation.”

Daily Beast
“Thoughtful, unsettling.... Baptist turns the long-accepted argument that slavery was economically inefficient on its head, and argues that it was an integral part of America’s economic rise.”

Nation
“Wonderful.... Baptist provides meticulous, extensive, and comprehensive evidence that capitalism and the wealth it created was absolutely dependent on the forced labor of Africans and African-Americans, downplaying culturalist arguments for Western prosperity.”

Providence Journal Best Books of 2014
“Baptist’s exhaustively researched, elegantly written and provocatively argued book details the connection between the growth of the institution of human bondage and economic innovations from 1783–1861.”

Guardian Australia Best Books of 2014
“A compelling case for recognizing slavery as fundamental to the rise of the
United States.”

Wall Street Journal
“Abolitionists were contemptuous of such self-serving nonsense, but they too tended to see slavery as an economically inefficient, and morally reprehensible, hangover from the premodern past. . . . In The Half Has Never Been Told, Edward E. Baptist takes passionate issue with such assumptions. He asserts that slavery was neither inherently inefficient nor a counterpoint to capitalism. Rather, he says, it was woven inextricably into the transnational fabric of early 19th-century capitalism.... Baptist writes with verve and a good eye for the dramatic.”

New York Times Book Review
“Baptist’s work is a valuable addition to the growing literature on slavery and American development.... Baptist has a knack for explaining complex financial matters in lucid prose.... The Half Has Never Been Told’s underlying argument is persuasive.”

Vikas Bajaj, New York Times
“New books like Empire of Cotton and The Half Has Never Been Told: Slavery and the Making of American Capitalism by Edward Baptist offer gripping and more nuanced stories of economic history.”

Seattle Times
“[Baptist] presents a detailed case, showing how the American economy benefited from profits gained by forced labor and financial instruments that enabled investors to profit from slavery.”

Huffington Post Black Voices blog
“Quite a gripping read. Baptist weaves deftly between analysis of economic data and narrative prose to paint a picture of American slavery that is pretty different from what you may have learned in high school Social Studies class.”

Salon
“Baptist’s real achievement is to ground these financial abstractions in the lives of ordinary people. In vivid passages, he describes the sights, smells and suffering of slavery. He writes about individual families torn apart by global markets. Above all, Baptist sets out to show how America’s rise to power is inextricable from the suffering of black slaves.”

Washington Independent Review of Books
“Edward Baptist’s The Half Has Never Been Told is an achievement of the first order.... With Baptist’s meticulous research and comprehensive, chronological approach, the other half of the story has now been told, and told very well.”

Christian Century
“Edward Baptist has written one of the richest and most provocative accounts of American slavery I have ever read. He so powerfully captures the pain and tragedy of plantation slavery.... The author brilliantly draws out the close relationship between plantation slavery in the newly opening territories and states of what was then called the Southwest (Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas) and the American capitalist explosion of the antebellum years.”

About the Author
Edward E. Baptist is an associate professor of history at Cornell University. Author of the award-winning Creating an Old South, he lives in Ithaca, New York.

Baptist unearths a big, nasty story: in the North and the South, slavery was the tainted fuel that kindled the fires of U.S. capitalism and made the country grow.”

As a scholar of race in this country, I found this book thought-provoking and important. This country has never dealt with the fact that slavery built this country. Hopefully this book will help us finally do so.

The Economist said this book was "too hard on slave owners"
By TravelGal
Edward Baptist has put his heart and soul into writing yet another fact-based and gripping book on how embedded slavery is in our society and how our economy grew and made wealthy individuals from those who enslaved other humans. It's not the normal story you've heard while growing up ... it's much more real, shocking and horrifying than 12 Years a Slave. I appreciate all the research that went into this book and marvel at the fact that it doesn't come off as an encyclopedia, but a novel you can't put down. Highly recommend.

To understand America, this book must be understood
By J. Norman Reid
This is an incredibly important book. Certainly, one cannot claim to understand slavery and its impact without having read it. I would venture to go farther: one cannot claim to understand American history, from before the Founding until the present day, without an understanding of the issues Bishop elucidates. Slavery's profound and pervasive influence--not merely for the enslaved, who bore the brunt of it--on our politics and our economy is poorly understood. This book, which should be required reading for all students at a collegiate level--and certainly for all educators--helps us to comprehend not only the brutality that is so often minimized but on slavery's effects on shaping who we are as a nation.

A classic history, but flawed by bias in its final chapters
By J C E Hitchcock
William George Hoskins (1908-1992) was a pioneering figure in the field of English local history, and in 1965 was appointed as the first ever university professor in that discipline (at the University of Leicester). This book, first published in 1955, has become something of a classic of its kind.

I bought it in the 1970s Pelican edition when I came across it recently in a second-hand bookshop, largely for the purposes of comparison with Oliver Rackham's more recent work "The History of the Countryside". The two works cover slightly different ground. Hoskins (as his title indicates) limits himself to England, and does not touch on Wales, Scotland or Ireland; Rackham covers the whole of the British Isles, although in practice he deals with England in greater detail than the other three countries. Rackham (as his title indicates) confines himself to the countryside, whereas Hoskins also covers industrial and urban landscapes, and even in rural areas deals with villages and the built environment as well as woods and farmland. Their methodologies are also different. Rackham devotes a chapter to each different type of rural habitat- woodland, fields, heathland, moorland, marshes, etc, whereas Hoskins' book is written in chronological order from prehistoric times to the twentieth century.

A key moment for Professor Hoskins was what he calls the "English Settlement"- the coming of the Anglo-Saxon invaders in the fifth century AD, after the withdrawal of the Roman legions. Few features of the modern English landscape can, in his view, be attributed to the Roman or pre-Roman period. Each succeeding age, however, has left a mark which still survives. The Saxons' great contribution was the English village; most of the population in Romano-British times either lived in towns and cities or in isolated hamlets and farmsteads. A few new settlements were founded in the Middle Ages, chiefly in upland districts or those with poor soil, which were consequently the last to be settled, but outside the industrial areas most of the settlements in existence today were founded between the fifth and eleventh centuries and mentioned in the Domesday Book.

Like Dr Rackham, Professor Hoskins tends to concentrate on some parts of England more than others. In his case there is a particular emphasis on the East Midlands; Rutland may be the smallest county in England but more space is devoted to it in this book than to larger counties such as Cumberland, Hampshire or Norfolk. One reason for this emphasis may be that Hoskins (originally from Devon) lived and worked for a long time in Leicestershire, but another may be that it was this area, more than any other, which was affected by the Enclosure Acts of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Although he does not use those terms, Hoskins makes a distinction similar to the one Rackham was to make between "Ancient Countryside" and "Planned Countryside".

In the "peripheral areas" of England- the south-west peninsula, the Home Counties, eastern East Anglia, the Welsh Border counties and the upland North- the countryside had, broadly speaking, taken on its present appearance by the sixteenth century. These are the regions of small (often irregularly shaped) fields, winding lanes and small villages and hamlets, with isolated farms scattered among them. The rest of England, however, especially the East Midlands, was still dominated by the open-field tradition, and would remain so until the open fields were enclosed by Act of Parliament. This is the "chequer-board" countryside with larger, more regular fields, straighter roads and larger villages with few isolated farmsteads. Because these areas did not acquire their current appearance until around 1800, or in some cases even later, the processes which shaped them are better documented and therefore easier for the historian to study.

Hoskins also has some interesting points to make about the growth of towns and the built environment. He shows, for example, that traditional regional styles of building mostly developed during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, a period when growing prosperity made it possible for the middle classes to rebuild their homes in local stone or brick; previously most houses, except those of the very rich, had in all parts of England been made of wattle-and-daub on a timber frame. The Enclosure Acts also had unexpected effects on urban landscapes as well as rural ones; Hoskins demonstrates this by comparing the growth of two East Midland cities during the Industrial Revolution. Nottingham was surrounded by unenclosed open fields over which numerous people possessed complicated grazing rights and which for many years made it virtually impossible to expand the city outwards; the result was overcrowding and some of the worst slums in England. At Leicester the surrounding fields had been enclosed before the growth of industry and it was easier to obtain land for building; consequently the city was more spacious and living conditions were better, even for working-class inhabitants.

For most of its length the book is not only very informative, but also a delight to read. In order to tell his story, Hoskins relies upon not only official documents but also literature and poetry; John Clare (another East Midlander) seems a particular favourite. At times his own prose style verges on the poetic itself. There is, nevertheless, a serious flaw in the book, which is why I have only given it four stars.

Hoskins was clearly a small-c conservative (which is not necessarily the same thing as a large-C Conservative) who tended to look back on the pre-industrial era as a lost Golden Age. He could see little good about the nineteenth century and nothing good about the twentieth. For him the Industrial Revolution achieved nothing other than the despoiling of once-beautiful landscapes and townscapes with dark satanic mills; he ignores the fact that by 1900, and certainly by 1955, most people enjoyed far higher standards of living than their ancestors had done in 1700 or 1800. In his final chapter Hoskins simply rails at the changes in the landscape wrought by the twentieth century without analysing the social causes of those changes or even saying in much detail what those changes are. He even bewails the large number of Air Force bases in Suffolk and Lincolnshire, even though only ten years before he wrote his book the nation had been very grateful for those bases and for the men who flew from them.

A book about something as subjective as landscape cannot simply be a record of objective scientific or historical fact, so I have no objection to personal opinions in a book of this nature. Opinion, however, cannot simply be a substitute for analysis.

For professionals, students, travelers and all who seek to understand the processes - natural and human - behind the scenery, this is the best place to start. Classic Readings in Organizational Behavior
By HowardK
Interesting collection of articles providing historical perspective on organizational behavior theories, however some articles seem to be rather severely edited. For example, comparing the version of Mary Parker Follett's "The Giving of Orders" found in Shafritz & Hyde's Classics of Public Administration with the version in this book, one can see where quite a bit of material was cut in this version - it might be called the Readers' Digest version of this article. I actually wound up using the version of the Follett article that is in the Shafritz and Hyde book instead of the version in this book for a citation in a paper I am writing for my org. behavior class, even though I purchased this expensive book as a text for the org. behavior class. Experience with the Follett article makes me wonder how much is missing from the other articles in Classic Readings in Organizational Behavior.
