It's one of the few books that's changed my life.

A magnificent introduction to an aesthetic sensibility I was always aware of, and appreciated, but didn't imagine had a name. Thanks to this small but finely-honed book I now understand the intellectual underpinnings of a profound way of looking at the world. Wabi-sabi--the name of this beauty/mindset--is the perfect antidote to my frenetic, digital life. I've given this book as a gift to friends and have received many heartfelt thanks.

This exquisite little volume is food for the soul. It should be required reading for our species. It is a subtle wake-up call...which we need to take to heart...we need to re-evaluate what we produce. We need to re-evaluate the legacy we leave. This book illustrates the respect we should have for nature. It illustrates the inspiration we should find in nature.
We have become a society producing perishable goods, much of which has little or no merit. Mr. Koren opens our eyes to the merit of producing goods which earn dignity with age, use and wear. It is truly an aesthetic for our time.

Please Buy This If You're A Perfectionist.

A solid reminder that exactly what you're trying to create--in whatever manner--will not be complete until something about that process or result is imperfect. And that the true beauty is not only in that imperfection, but your acceptance of it.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who, like me, is a rigid Type A with difficulty acknowledging (let alone accepting!) that the standard Earth day is 24 hours instead of 62 and sometimes failures are our greatest successes. While not directly instructing you on the specific creation of imperfections within your own work, this book will make you uncomfortable in the most gently reassuring way while you look for the reasons for those flaws and examine the moments of personal growth they allow you and whoever may view or experience what you make secondhand.

My Initial Impressions - UPDATED

I got my a6000 in April as a birthday present. Just purchased this Guide in late August. This is my first Sony camera. My other cameras are Canons. I have not read thru this guide yet, so this is just an "initial impression." I'd like to come back later with a more specific review later after I've used the guide for a month or so.

In scanning thru the book, it seems to be very thorough and well-written, with plenty of plain English explanations and descriptions. Definitely more than just a "manual" that simply tells you what all the buttons and menus mean. It talks about all the buttons, all the menu options, plus much more re how and when to use certain settings etc. Seems to be a good teaching guide in addition to a "user" guide. It's a little over an inch thick -so there is plenty here to read. My first impression is that this will be a very good resource for me. One immediate downside I notice though is that although the pictures on the cover are beautiful color photos (taken with the a6000 I assume), all the actual pictures used as samples to explain items are black and white! The B&W photos don't help very much with the explanations - can't see the nuances that are being explained in the book. Plenty of helpful pictures throughout the book, but you can't get any appreciation of what's being described or explained because the pics are B&W. In my view, this really craters a huge potential value in this book. Aside from the useless B&W photos, the context, tone, method of explanation, and thoroughness all seem top notch. I'm sure I'll still learn a great deal.

I can provide an update now that I've gone through the Guide, grouped in + and - below.

This is a great resource for a6000 owners and I'm changing my rating from 3 stars to 4.

+ Re my original comments about the pics in the Guide being in B&W ... I discovered that the author does indeed provide a free full color PDF version of the book if you send him an email with your receipt attached. Once you download the free color PDF version, you can see all the material in color, including all the sample pics. Can also download the PDF version to your other devices. [This free download is mentioned in the intro pages prior to the Table of Contents, so you may miss it if you are not looking for it.]

+ This not a "pocket guide" by any means. At almost 600 pages, it's pretty thick. But I can't think of any material that was superfluous or irrelevant. Except for a few pages devoted to plugging the author's photography blog and photography seminars, it was all good, useful content provided in a tone focused towards users that are a few steps beyond "beginner." I'll take the few pages of advertising given all the other good, succint, plain language guidance and tips.

+ Extra tips and techniques that apply to digital photography, regardless of camera, are provided in the back.

+ Guide is well-written and provides short explanations, detailed explanations, sample pictures, sample menu screen shots, and tables for quick reference. Every item, button, and menu option is explained in a friendly, understandable manner.

+ I sat down with this Guide, a6000 in hand, and reviewed all my settings while reading the Guide explanations.

-All the page references are off by 2 pages. For example, the Guide (and Index) may refer to an item on page 31, but the actual item being referred to is on page 29. Maybe this was caused by the addition of the 2 intro pages after final edit?

-A couple of instances where the exact same text is repeated on multiple pages. Not sure if this was intentional or not. Repeated text makes it seems like the book was not closely edited.

Great book!

The Sony A6000 manual that comes with the camera is sadly lacking. This book gets into the "secrets" of the camera so an individual can get the most out of the functionality of the camera. I bought the black and white book as it was much cheaper than the color copy. Once you have the B&W version, there is on page ii of the book direction on getting a pdf copy from the author. Great book!

Richard Cook, Master of Counselling (Hons.) , B.D., B.Ed., Dip.Tchg. Dean of Counsellor Education at Bethlehem Tertiary Institute in Tauranga, New Zealand, with 15 years experience in counselling and supervision and 12 years in the teaching of counselling. Irene Alexander, Ph. D., M. Phil., B.Sc., Dean of the School of Social Sciences at Christian Heritage College in Brisbane with 25 years experience as a psychologist, therapist and supervisor and 17 years experience in tertiary teaching. This book is the result of several years of research and writing by the editors and the contributors to the text from across Australia and New Zealand.

As a counselling student, I found this book inspirational in understanding the concept of narrative therapy and an added bonus from the christian faith perspective. It is an excellent read and one which can be read over and over again. I thank the author for their input.

It is what it says, conversations between Narrative Therapy and Christian Faith. The good thing is, that many people have a say, so the book gives an excellent overview of a variety of ways of Christian thinking in relation to this subject.

An excellent in-depth resource

Well written, easy to understand and this would be an ideal addition to high school and college resource centers. The book has value for all ages and stages of life. The author's website has been used extensively at our house and helped our son overcome some of his anxieties in social groups. As parents it gave us greater insight and was a great starting point for conversations. Happy to see that he wrote this book!

Realistic answers to succeed socially

This book won't tell you things like "be a good listener and interested in people" to make friends. It will not give vague answers like most social articles out there do. This book comes with direct answers to any social question I have ever had.

Most of the information in the book is from the author's website, and it has helped transform me from an awkward, quiet, anxious person into someone who is comfortable conversing with anyone and who can easily make friends. I mostly bought this book to support the author and say thanks. The information has changed my life and can change yours too.
