Robin Baker is a bestselling author in the field of sexual biology whose books include SPERM WARS (Basic, 1996), BABY WARS (Ecco, 1999), and SEX IN THE FUTURE (Arcade, 2000). Personally I would have preferred just the facts of the studies that were done and some interpretation. The author uses real life drama to illustrate his points. Some of that might be fun for many readers. All in all it helps explain some facets of human sexual behavior that remain a mystery to many people.

Great for young readers who enjoy a fast-paced adventure storyline!

Pretty good storyline, although fairly predictable. Intriguing fast paced story, but really not for those who don't enjoy a quick and simple read.

Pros:
Good storyline
Characters were well-developed
Fast-paced

Cons:
Predictable
Not much emotional tension

Other thoughts:
I would recommend this book to a younger audience. Maybe 15 and under. It is not a deep mystery book, and I feel as though sometimes it tries to be a little too hard. This book is a easy read, and will capture your attention if you enjoy most adventure stories.

Don't be discouraged by this review. I give it 4 stars! I would recommend it to most readers. Overall, it was worth my 2$, even though I won't buy the sequel.

Interesting and creative, but a bit predictable.

This was a pretty good, simple read, but predictable. It was interesting and creative, and moved at a steady pace. SPOILER > I was disappointed that the two main characters could have been romantic/a couple, but everything was kept so platonic is was almost stale. I suppose that would make this a good (very) young adult book - probably pre-high school. As an adult, I enjoyed the book and thought it could be read by a child in fifth or sixth grade with little worry about the content.

Lovely graphic book for children

This review is for the graphic novel of the City of Embers, not for the novel itself. For whatever reason Amazon has the reviews of the two things mixed.

City of Ember has the format of a traditional serial novel, with a lot of slow pace that builds up to the end, when the real action commences and a cliff-hanger is provided for you to hold on until next episode. I have never heard of read the original Jeanne DuPrau's novels or seen the movie, so I cannot comment on Dallas Middaugh's adaptation. However, I expected, a priori, a bit of chopping off for having done for the graphic book. Although I enjoyed the graphic novel, I felt that the story was a bit hurried at times, a bit too slow others, and a bit superficial others, especially with regards to the relationship between the characters.

EXPLORING THE BOOK
The City of Ember, nevertheless, is a delightful science fiction story that is not just what it looks like. Many themes are touched in this novel and you can use the book to start a conversation with your children or with your students on different subjects. Some of the questions you might ask the oldest ones are:
~~ Is it valid to question authority? ~~ If affirmative, in which circumstances? ~~ In which way/s can a Government keepd its citizens in the dark? Any examples in our country, region or the world nowadays you think of? ~~ Do you think of any circumstances when keeping somebody in the dark about something could/would benefit them? ~~ If you are kept in the dark, how do see what is real and what is not? Do you have a way to do that? ~~ Which government system does build a better society and makes individuals happier? ~~ Which things would surprise you in your daily life if you didn't take them for granted? ~~ Can individuals help change society? ~~ How would you describe the things that surround you if you saw them for the first time ever? ~~ What is needed for any person to *see* the world for what it really is? ~~ Would society be better if instead of choosing our professions, the Government randomly assigned those needed and available? ~~ Would your life be different if instead of following a profession of your interest you were assigned another for life? Could you still develop your talent and qualities in any circumstances and profession disregarding which one is? Could you still be useful to society or even more useful? Could/Would you be happy? ~~ Do the plot, themes or characters in this book remind you of any others you have previous read? ~~ In which way does this novel relate to the Platonic allegory of the cave? ~~ In which way the escape of city is similar to leaving your parents' when you become an adult?

THE ARTWORK
I love Niklas Asker illustration work for this novel. He has created an expressive world and a visual narrative that doesn't need of much text to be understood. The book feels very cinematic, the composition and arrangement of the vignettes and visual frames is varied and interesting, with interior, exterior and landscape scenes that are always appropriate and feel right to me. I especially love the indoors images as they feel warm and cozy, like a real home. The characters are very expressive as well.

The colouring by Niklas Asker & Bo Ashi is wonderful. The shadow work is amazing and very detailed, and helps tremendously to create ambience and mood.

Chris Dickey's lettering is quite classic and, mostly, non-invasive. Dialogues are included in classic balloons, and narrative references in square marquees at the top or bottom of the page; the start of a chapter has a lovely broken piece of paper that mirrors the broken instructions sheet in the story. On the contrary, I didn't like the noise and ambience lettering, which was invasive, too bold, too large, and too much of a fracture. Although it has a narrative value, I feel it is out of tune with the rest of the book's imagery.

NEXT VOLUMES COMING?
There is nothing that I find more frustrating and irritating that realising that a book I am reading is just the first part of something that we don't know is ever to be continued. DuPrau published the other three books in the series a while ago, so I wonder why making a graphic novel just out of the first book and not out of the whole series, or why not publishing the other volumes at a reasonable pace? Is this an ongoing project and other volumes will see the light (pun!) soonish? Or is this just an isolated graphic book that will never been continued?

RENDERING FOR KINDLE
I am quite happy on how this graphic novel works on Kindle, the quality of graphics and colours in my tablet, and the fact that the size of the downloadable file is reasonable. There is no index in the lateral bar, something that I don't see why not and that could be easily fixed in the electronic edition.

MIND
This graphic book is just an abridged version on the first book of the series. This book is mostly for mid-grade children and young teens. If you want to read the whole series you better grab the written books.

Using case studies from his psychology practice as well as his own experiences as a divorced father who once faced a difficult time with his eldest daughter, Coleman provides strategies for managing the guilt and regret that can arise in parents as children grow into teens and young adults. He advises parents to take responsibility for their past actions, to make amends, to forgive both themselves and their children, and to move guilt and shame to the background and gratitude to the foreground. By following these "essential principles," Coleman claims, emotionally wounded parents will begin to overcome the pain of relationships gone awry and move on to a more hopeful future. About the Author

Dr. Joshua Coleman, Ph.D., is an internationally recognized expert in parenting, couples, families, and relationships. He is a Senior Fellow with the Council on Contemporary Families. The author of two critically acclaimed books, The Marriage Makeover and The Lazy Husband, he is a frequent contributor to the San Francisco Chronicle, and his advice has been featured in the New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, Psychology Today, the Times (London), and elsewhere. He is a frequent guest on the Today show and has appeared on 20/20, Good Morning America, and many other news programs. He lives with his family in the San Francisco Bay area.

A Book That Can Really Help

Those of us who have been estranged by an adult child are so devastated-- they can't usually find anyone capable or knowledgeable enough to give them any reasons or comfort for the most horrible and painful thing ever done by children to their parents. All they want is to find someone who can tell them reasons this may have happened to them, and what might be wrong with their children, who should be more on their way to a great new life as an adult. Dr. Coleman is one of the best new voices of insight to this tragedy. He has been seen and heard on tv and radio programs; he also runs a webinar on the internet which is the best communication on the subject you could ever find. This is one of his books. He has insights on lots of things about the modern family, and its troubles with family , and especially children, teen-age or adult. It seems that no matter what the actual age of your children might be, they are also very young in some aspects of themselves and their development. Dr. Coleman explains many of these tough times to parents who may not know as much about their children as they would like to. Anyone who is in this sad situation should read Dr. Coleman!

NOT A BOOK FOR PARENTS OF ESTRANGED ADULT CHILDREN. There is only one chapter in the back of the book devoted to adult children. The title page is sorely misleading. This a book for parents of teenagers.

Good book, but the binding sucks!

The content of the book is good. Lots of good quality photos from many different genres and artists. Nothing to really fault with the content...it's a thick book. The hard part is that for the money spent and the quality of the content, the binding really sucks. I mean really sucks. I literally flipped through the book from front to back once and the binding began to separate. It looks like the glue holding the binding to the pages is too brittle and it splits and cracks away, leaving the pages unsupported. Now when I flip through the book again, I can see the pages separating from each other. makes me wonder how many more readings I will get out of this before the whole thing falls apart. It's a shame to that something as basic as book bindery could have such a negative effect on an otherwise good book of tattoo art. Buyer beware!

Good content, terrible binding.

This book contains 72 artists in all spread over 447 pages. Each artist has one page describing how they got started in tattooing/why they got interested/personal background, and then a few pages showing examples from their portfolio. Each portfolio shows pictures of tattoos ranging from full body to small tattoos. All pictures are on real people and are shown on a black background. There is a wide range of tattoo styles shown in the book, from cartoon-y to very realistic portrayals. At the back there is a list of their respective websites so you can check out more of their stuff. The content of the book IS quite interesting and I would buy from this company again if there is more content like this.

However, the binding is terrible. I flicked through the pages (carefully!) over the course of two nights when I first received it. That next morning when I went to move the book, the pages felt bottom heavy, and that was because the binding is basically gone. The pages are now stuck together very flimsily and I have to be VERY gentle with it in order for it to stay together. The binding looks like very basic glue, so no wonder. I wish it was bound better, because I really do like the content.

A Quantity of Quality!

The Mammoth Book of Tattoos is a stunning collection of artwork from a conglomerate of select tattoo masters of this generation. Most of the artwork featured in this book is in the styles of modern and Japanese tattoo art, so the variety is slightly limited, but all the photographs are in full color and dazzling quality which really draws you into the depth and detail of each tattoo.

Very little information is offered on the art of tattooing and the artists themselves, but the pictures speak volumes and offer a story that is, perhaps, not possible in the form of the written word. I have absolutely no negative comments about this book. Of all the tattoo-related literature I have collected thus far, The Mammoth Book of Tattoos is by far my favorite to look at again and again.

This book is the best one-volume selection of Aristotle's works out there. Your other choices are either the two-volume complete works of Aristotle (ISBN: 069101650X and 0691016518), choppy and ragged selections of the overall books, or buying the individual books. This books facilitates study of Aristotle's comprehensive and coherent philosophy.
This edition has Organon, Physics, On The Heavens, On generation And Corruption, On The Soul, Short Physical Treaties, the Three Animals Treaties, Metaphysics, Ethics, Politics, Rhetoric, and Poetics. You have all of the standards that a student would need, plus the lesser-known works. Therefore, this book has achieved the Aristotelian "mean." It is in perfect balance.
The selection is superb, but the translation is moderate. Being done in the 1940's, it sounds tinny. The "old school" translation is full of Latinisms, archaisms, and is stuffy. All this means that it is unclear, which is deadly to a translation.
The Philosophy of Aristotle (ISBN: 0451528875), on the other hand, is a lively and vibrant. And above all, a clear translation.
I recommend getting the hardcover edition. The paper is sturdy, and not the newsprint like tin the soft cover. Furthermore, it is a high-quality binding, and even comes in a protecting box. This book is made to last, to endure, and to be used.

Excellent!

Not everyone who is interested in reading Aristotle will want to buy the two volumes of the Oxford translation of Aristotle's complete works. If you're someone who is studying Aristotle for a college course or simply want to become acquainted with what he wrote, then I recommend this book. As other reviewers have said it has complete versions of all of the most famous works of Aristotle e.g. Nichomachean Ethics,Politics,Metaphysics and Physics and also the complete Categories and De Interpretatione from the Organon. As for the translations, these are taken from the original Oxford translation published in 12 volumes in the 1920's. They may not be quite as up to date as the translations in the present Oxford translation but they're perfectly acceptable and correct. As it says on the back cover of the book, this is the best one volume edition of Aristotle's works that you can buy.

The Oxford translation seems better than this one

I'm only just starting to read Aristotle's works, but already I wish I got the 2-volume Oxford set. Compare the line 20 of the first book (translated by Edghill) from Basic Works:

"Of things themselves some are predicable of a subject, and are never present in a subject. Thus 'man' is predicable of the individual man, and is never present in a subject."

to the corresponding line from the Oxford (translated by Ackrill):

"Of things there are (a) some are *said* of a subject but are not *in* any subject. For example, man is said of a subject, the individual man, but is not in any subject."

The Oxford seems to be a smoother translation, and perhaps a little clearer.

Also some of the works in Basic Works are abridged. For example, Chapters 4-33 are omitted from On Sophistical Refutations.

UPDATE 2010-12-13 -----------------

I found the Oxford translation hard going - too hard, really. Note that the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy page on Aristotle mentions that while the Oxford texts are the standard, Irwin and Fine's "Aristotle: Selections" is an "excellent translation", so I wish I got that instead. Really though, what I needed was Adler's "Aristotle for Everybody" - I am reading that now and construct no impediment to its luminous flood.
