About the Author
W. B. Worthen, Alice Brady Pels Professor in the Arts, is Professor and Chair of the Department of Theater at Barnard College, Columbia University. He is the author of Shakespeare and the Force of Modern Performance (Cambridge University Press, 2003) Shakespeare and the Authority of Performance (Cambridge University Press, 1997), Modern Drama and the Rhetoric of Theater (University of California Press, 1992), The Idea of the Actor: Drama and the Ethics of Performance (Princeton University Press, 1984), Modern Drama: Plays, Criticism, Theory (Wadsworth, 1995), and of many articles on modern drama, Shakespeare, and theories of performance. Professor Worthen received his B. A. in English from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and his Ph.D. in English from Princeton University, and has held research fellowships form the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment of the Humanities. I read so much about the anthology, but nowhere did I find what plays were actually presented, for those interested here is the list: Orestia, Agamemnon, Liberation Bearers, Eumenides, Oedipos King, Medea, Lysistrata, Matsukaze, Chushingura, Second Shepards' Pageant, Everyman, Doctor Faustus, Hamlet, The Tempest, Life is a Dream, Tartuffe, Phaedra, The Rover, Loa DIvine Narcissusm Recruiting Officer, Doll House, Father, Cherry Orchard, Major Barbara, Six Characters..., Mother Courage, Endgame, Homecoming, Hamletmachine, Cloud Nine, Our Country's Good, Trifles, Hairy Ape, Glass Menagerie, Dutchman, Vedidos, True West, Fences, M Butterfly, Angels in America I, Fires in the Mirror, America Play, Lady Aoi, My Beatles, A Tempest, Information for Foreigners, Death and King's Horseman, Translations, Gangsters, No Sugar, Dry Lips Oghta..., Valley Song. Nice sampling, but hardly a buffet

This Anthology's shortcomings in no way reflect poorly on the material in the book, but rather in what the editors chose to exclude. All the pieces (and there are many) come with excellent background information, interesting and relevant theory, and most importantly source text from many of the relevant playwrights, including original essays by Brecht and Artaud. The anthology includes many of the classics, and where it proves itself especially useful is in its inclusion of sociopolotical plays such as "Information for Foreigners" and "Los Vendidos", contemporary rewrites such as "Hamletmachine" and the clever pairing of the classic "Tempest" with the lesser known searing colonization commentary "A Tempest" by Cesaire. But totally lacking is treatment of the entire Roman and Medieval periods, as well as the post-Shakespeare pre-Ibsen area. The anthology remains an invaluable tool for survey courses (I used it for a Intro Theatre Studies Class) but perhaps is too limited for more specific Theatre applications.

Strong with some minor exceptions

I would first like to mention that this book has stunning supplementary materials (theory, performance discussions, etc.) that make the book well worth using for a general survey of Western dramatic history.
But it is what is excluded or glossed that makes this collection fall somewhat short. I teach out of this book for a major university (it is the required text for multiple other classes, so it is requested that I use this text as well.) While it does cover many major and significant periods, the Romans are entirely ignored and non-western theatre is seemingly thrown in as a sidethought... leading many of my students to question whether there is really a worthwhile eastern theatre tradition. When teaching Greeks and Renaissance drama, it is critical to understand the approach that the Romans took to the theatre. Even a Senecan tragedy would have enlivened the "Classical" section of the anthology.
I do understand that not ALL periods can be given equal weight, but by disrgarding periods and regions (or even worse, by giving them such short shrift that nobody even considers them beyond a passing comment) our students are presented an incomplete history of theatre. I must order a number of other texts to fill these holes in the historical timeline.
That being said, what this anthology does include is well documented and supported by appropriate texts. As I mentioned, it is a good basic introduction to theatre history and theory (and is possibly the strongest out there for this task) and should deserve 4 stars, but the 3 stars reflects my reservations above.

Valuable in many situations

Although originally created and consistently lauded for helping kids learn science facts this book has proven valuable many times in helping adult professionals overcome the Will Rogers syndrome 'It's not what you don't know that hurts, it is what you do know --- that ain't so!' Time and again professional adults have been quite certain about their understanding of a situation only to founder in a matter of minutes when attempting to express themselves in the concept map discipline. More importantly when two or more people agree to communicate with concept maps dialogue occurs!

The combination of the CMap software and the book's usage rationale and examples creates a learning environment that has served many situations quite well.

My only disappointment is that the author did not choose the title Learning, Using and Creating Knowledge so that it could truly bring LUCK to all who read it.

Concept Mapping’s Origins, Rationale, Theory, and Application

This book provides extensive context, background on concept maps, their place in learning and knowledge discovery.

It describes how concept maps emerged from educational research in the early 1970’s to make records of what children know. It relates how interviews with children and the identification of concept words and propositions led to the development of concept maps as a means of showing key ideas and their relationships via diagrammatic representation (e.g. think of bubble charts with arrows indicating how different elements are related to one another).

The book explains how concept maps are a good way for teachers to organize knowledge for instruction. It conveys ways such maps are a helpful means for students to find key concepts and principles in lectures, reading and instructional materials. This work also relates concept mapping as a useful approach for companies in representing what they do, how their product/services work, and in making enhancements.

This story unfolds through the respective chapters including (1) an overview of the book, (2) the need for a theory of education, (3) meaningful learning for empowerment, (4) construction of new meanings, (5) Ausubel’s assimilation learning theory, (6) the nature of knowledge and how humans create knowledge, (7) the effective teacher/manager, (8) the context for education/management, (9) evaluation and rewards, and (10) improving education in schools and corporations. Throughout the book, many charts, diagrams, figures and examples help inform the text. In fact, concept maps appear at various points to explain the book and it various aspects. In addition, there are appendices that offer “how to” steps.

As I read more about concept mapping, I was stuck by parallels of this approach with that of the one introduced by Peter Ramus in the 16th century. The Ramus visual learning approach went viral at that time and had a major impact on education and learning (see my review on Walter Ong’s classic book on the subject). Further examination of these parallels could be most interesting and useful in understanding these methods and their effects.

Novak’s book gives an extensive treatment of concept mapping’s origins, rationale, related theory, with some application examples. They also explore how overproduction and volatile prices led to increasing regulation and gave broad regulatory powers to the Texas Railroad Commission.

About the Author
DIANA DAVIDS HINTON has a Ph.D. in History from Yale University and holds the J. Conrad Dunagan Chair in Regional and Business History at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.

ROGER M. OLIEN, who has a Ph.D. in History from Brown University, lives in Austin and is a member of the Texas State Historical Association Speakers Bureau. The authors have written five books and numerous articles on the petroleum industry.

A great introduction to the early history of the Early Oil industry focussing on Texas I went for the Audible version

It would be a pity if this excellent work only found its way into the above homes.
I found it a very useful introduction to the early history of Oil. It's focus is on Texas and the approach is by area and chronology.
Eg it takes the Spindletop area and follows its story through in that chapter
Later it takes the Permian Basin and shows how it fairly barren and rug hard area became a major oil area.
One learns about sweet crude and (sulphurous ) sour crude and crude with a fair mixture of paraffin
Technological developments like developments in drilling,storage, pipelines, refining and exploration are scattered throughout the text.
With improvements in refining Aviation Octane arrived just before WWII and the modern Plastics industry was just starting
One is introduced to a number of major and smaller players with bigger firms,indecent ants and loners.
One sees how Texas aimed to control the finances so that Texas benefitted most
One also learns about the problems for the Permian Basin-- it's inassessability and the poor nature of its crude so that it didn't attract a premium
One learns how the University of Texas became the richest University in the World. In the Texas constitution from the 1860's I think , the founders of Texas put extensive but near valueless lands aside for 2 universities. Nothing much came of this till oil was struck on University lands in the Permian Basin. The story has lots of twists and turns (what royalties went to Ranchers, what to the University of Texas, what to UAM etc)
I hope I haven't put you wrong on the details. I have learnt a lot from the book and will be going though it again to try and firm up on a number of details.

I had the kindle version but found I made a lot more progress by someone reading it to me
I think this helps bring out the gripping nature of the story

This book, bought for our son whose career is in the oil and gas industry, was just right for him. I had reviewed another copy while visiting my brother, Bill Fortune. He, too, received a new copy a few weeks ago and upon his recommendation, I decided to buy one for our son. I read quite a bit from the book before I passed it on and for sure want to read it all someday. The fact that it was once in a library made it quite interesting. We Texans enjoy all aspects of our state history and what I read did not disappoint. The preface was clear in expressing the intent of the book and I am certain that our son aw well as his wife [ her family has been in the West Texas oil and gas work for generations] will be blessed with this fascinating read. I recommend it for a gift to almost anyone who enjoys Texas history.

This is a fantastic book for those with an interest in the oil industry, I bought 4 copies as I have relatives that were involved in the early days of oil exploration in south Louisiana.. They really enjoyed this book.

My favorite knot book

First of all, I don't understand "D. Hill's" review of this book, as it is my favorite (and I have ALL the well known books on the subject of knots, from the great Ashley Book of Knots to Stuart Grainger's books, Hervey Garrett Smith's, Geoffrey Budworth's,etc., etc.) and full of "recipes" for different decorative and useful objects instead of just how to tie particular knots (which this book also does). I even used it as a guide to make all my Christmas presents last year! From front door mats to key fob stocking stuffers to fenders for a friend's boat. I turned the binocular strap into an eyeglass holder for my grandmother (as well as for it's intended purpose for a friend), made the square knot belt for my brother, made the bell rope for a light pull cord for myself, a set of place mats, glass coasters and napkin rings out of the ocean plait mat and some turk's heads and covered my niece's car steering wheel with French whipping!

ALL of the projects were easy to follow with the instructions as well as the superb drawings that made the knots more clear than even Hervey Garrett Smith's excellent artwork (and anyone who has The Marlinspike Sailor in their library knows what a statement THAT is!).

I highly recommend this book and hope that Des produces another that comes even half as good as this one is.

A superb and unique craft guide

Written by a professional ropeworker of 25 years experience, and the co-founder of the International Guild of Knot Tyers, Des Pawson's Knot Craft is a step-by-step breakdown of how to apply knots, materials, and hands-on skill to create bellropes, key fobs, mats, doorstops, kinfe lanyards, belts, and more. Extensive black-and-white illustrations by Ann Norman deftly walk the reader through the basic steps of each project. It should be stressed that Des Pawson's Knot Craft is primarily a craft and creation book; though the novice knot-worker receives instruction in many basic ways to tie, it is not specifically an instruction manual for the myriad nuances of seaman's knots. A superb and unique craft guide packed with ideas for inexpensive homemade gift projects.

This is an excellent handbook of fancy knot work, from mats to coverings, fenders, fancy lanyards and utility rope work with a decorative flair. It also goes into making the tools required, and is well illustrated and it makes it easy to understand even complex projects.

Very well done, and I highly recommend this book as an inspiration for your creative projects.

Not bad but...

I'm about to sit my FRACS (orth) in Australia, and ordered this book in the hope it would provide some practice for our MCQ's (though ours are slightly different, with a stem followed by 5 true or false answers). This book is OK, but I found the level to be a little easy, and there are a few mistakes in the answers' reasoning at times. It may have been more use to me a few months earlier in my revision to help cement the basics.

Getting Social with your Photos

I tend to be a bit of a meathead around my smartphone. There are only a few apps I use on a regular basis -- mostly because I still think a phone should be a **phone**. Any of that other stuff is just needless extras. Pull up yer pants, ye whippersnappers.

I've been even worse with my cellphone camera. I barely ever used it on my other devices -- and the entire problem was that I'd gotten used to using film cameras growing up. Once digital photography drove film cameras into extinction, I mostly quit taking pictures altogether. But I've started taking pictures for my job, so it was time to get back on the horse -- and this book helped out a lot.

This book is going to be most helpful to you if you're fairly well-acquainted with photography to begin with. It's especially useful if you're fairly accustomed to digital photography already, but most of what's discussed will allow even neophytes to catch up to the rest of the class quickly. Even better, it's easy to pick up some simple tricks you never knew about, and several that you never even dreamed were possible with a smartphone camera. I may not be ready to try long exposures, time lapses, photo layering, or anything requiring serious photo-editing skills -- but there are a lot more techniques, most of them quite simple, that I've started experimenting with. And I'm already seeing an improvement in the photos I take.

Possibly the most useful chapter of this book is the one listing photographers worth following on social media. It's not really an opportunity to name-drop -- it gives aspiring photogs some people who it'd be good to keep track of, just to keep yourself inspired and challenged by what the experts are doing.

As is mentioned several times in the book, the best camera is the one you have with you -- and nowadays, almost everyone has a pretty good camera in their pocket, ready to snap a photo anytime.

The photos are winners, the techniques are wonderfully outlined, and the text and layout make the whole book a fast and fun read. Pick it up -- you'll be glad you did.

1960s Game Of Symbolic Logic.

I'd love to play this game, but cannot find anyone else brave enough to undergo the learning curve. It is no longer fashionable to like mathy stuff for fun.

What the comes in the box (if yours looks like mine it is a VCT case, if you have an older copy it will be a dark blue vinyl-covered folder with foam inserts to hold the dice) are two sets of dice, red and blue, several playing mats, an egg-timer and a thick book of rules.

There are 21 games in the book that teach the various rules in easy bites.

The games teach symbolic logic. A "WFF" is a well-formed formula. The formulas in question are arrived at by rolling the dice. Each set of dice has two types; dice marked C A K E N R and i o p q r s.

A WFF is: p,q,r or s OR N followed by a WFF OR C,A,K,E followed by two WFFs. So NCKqrNAsNp is a WFF.

A proof is a set of legal operations that take axioms defined by rolls of the dice and derive WFFs using logical rules given in the book. Rules like "given p and q, Cpq" or "Given Cpq and p, q".

The games build in complexity and adding more rules as they go, and at some point one finds out that C,A,K,E and N correspond to logical operations (K is conjunction if I remember correctly, N is negation).

The problem used to illustrate the why of this game given in the rules is the so-called "Tardy Bus Problem", a logical puzzle once given to children of a certain age. If you remember truth tables and matrices of rules and axioms you'll have an inkling of what the game encompasses in very abstract terms.

The aim was to teach a student how to manipulate symbolic logic structures using a game framework. When this game was invented, people were supposed to enjoy math and symbolic logic was once thought to hold great promise for sorting out tortuous language in documents (contracts and so forth). That promise has never been fulfilled, but the symbolic logic techniques taught in this product are of great utility to any would-be computer specialist even today.

The product is awesome

Although I didn't buy this one, this looks just about how mine does now. Since there are no reviews, I thought I might make one so people out there, know how fun and useful this game really is. This isn't just any game. This is a game that requires some rather intensive rational thought. It is very entertaining. If you were to play this game for a few hours everyday for three weeks, statistics say that you can reach your maximum potential IQ faster via this method. On average, the children who played this game vigorously for three weeks in a row gained 20 IQ points. Remember, 100 is average. You can supposedly attain the "Superior Intelligence" rank if you were originally confirmed to have an IQ of just 100. Those 20 extra IQ points will put you in a much better place than you are now, trust me. This game is much more fun if played with other people for you can have a competition with them, making time go EVEN faster! The questions in the booklet are challenging and the materials of the dice (that has letter on them) are all good. The booklet is quite durable as well. I believe my father bought one sometime after it came out - he is 61 years old now and is quite intelligent. He qualified for MIT and MENSA but his parents couldn't afford it.

He played this game, and so should you! I'm going to do the same thing this coming June when I have plenty of time to VIGOROUSLY play this game to NOTHING! I shall defeat it, and SO SHOULD YOU! I think this product is still quite expensive but WORTH IT! Try looking around for cheaper versions of this if you don't have the money to buy it. In this day and age, your mind is VERY important. It indeed mean the difference between life and death. In the present days, many economies are going to crash and thousands of companies may go bankrupt and go out of business. You need to know where to be and what to do during this time which requires experience and intelligence. This product will help you think much more clearly than you probably do now. Cheers!
